DPT Curriculum
Our traditional body systems aligned DPT curriculum spans foundational sciences, applied sciences, clinical management, behavioral and professional sciences, and critical inquiry and research sciences to form the basis of your professional knowledge.
- 7 semesters (108 weeks, 28 months)
- 8 on-site immersion labs
- 32 weeks of clinical education
- Hybrid delivery model
Schedule and Time Commitment
- Attendance is required (video on) for sync sessions during remote learning weeks. Students engage in approximately 6-10 hours of synchronous online learning and exams a week. Synch sessions and exams are scheduled Monday- Friday between 10am EST and 5pm EST.
- Students should expect at least 30-40 hours of asynchronous learning per week.
- Attendance is required at all on-site lab immersions and full-time clinical education experiences.
- Given the demands of the accelerated delivery model, the program strongly recommends that students work no more than 10-12 hours/week.
Components of Our Curriculum
Course Delivery
The didactic curriculum intentionally integrates foundational, applied, and clinical sciences to emphasize the interdependence of the body’s systems. This integrated approach supports the development of clinical reasoning and prepares students to manage patients with diverse health conditions across the lifespan and across a variety of practice settings.
Remote Learning
- Asynchronous Online Learning: Utilizes high-quality educational technology to deliver faculty-developed pre-recorded lectures, videos, readings, checks for understanding, interactive learning activities, and case-based assignments that support flexible, self-regulated learning.
- Synchronous Sessions: Faculty-guided, required synchronous sessions (weekly or bi-weekly by course) emphasize clinical reasoning, reflection, and application of content.
- Office Hours: Drop-in sessions with no appointment required, dedicated to supporting student understanding, strengthening faculty-student connections, and reinforcing clinical correlations.
On-Site Immersion Labs
- Students come to BGSU for 8 immersion labs throughout the didactic curriculum.
- The immersion labs serve as focused time to immerse in hands-on training, practice clinical skills, receive in-person feedback, and engage in assessment (skills check and practical exams).
- Simulation lab experiences, real patient encounters, and mock patient encounters assist students in preparing for entry-level practice and clinical education.
- 1:10 faculty-to-student ratio promotes guidance, oversite, professional faculty relationships, and skills related to professionalism and communication.
- Lab sessions range from 5-11 consecutive days in length, including Saturdays (no lab on Sundays).
- Attendance is mandatory at all on-sit lab immersions.
Clinical Education
- Students spend 32 weeks in immersive full-time clinical education.
- Diverse settings and locations nationwide.
- Three clinical rotations: #1 (8 weeks), #2 (8 weeks), #3 (terminal rotation, 14 weeks)
- Students should be prepared for travel or relocation based on site availability.
