How to Apply

homecoming-birds

Being selected as a mascot is one of the highest honors at BGSU.  Below you will find information concerning the application process.  Please note that the identities of the students who serve as Freddie and Frieda Falcon remain confidential until the reveal event in February. We do ask that if you are applying that you keep your participation in this process confidential.

Qualifications to be Freddie or Frieda:

  • You must have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA
  • Be in good standing with the university
  • Be an undergraduate student (first year, sophomore, junior or senior)
  • Be a full-time student in the Fall & Spring

A completed application must be submitted.  If selected for an interview, you must be able to participate in an in-person interview process.

If selected, you must perform your mascot duties from April through the end of the Spring Semester. This currently includes all New Student Orientation dates during the summer, athletic appearances during winter/spring break, late night/early morning events on and off campus, and many other appearances.

A completed application includes a submitted application (released in Spring 2025), a grade and conduct check conducted by a University administrator (after your application is submitted), and a completed time commitment agreement grid (listing all of your current and anticipated involvements for next year).  If selected, the successful candidates will then be required to submit a signed liability waiver form, along with a copy of both your health insurance card and your BGSU Student ID.

Being Freddie/Frieda is a significant time commitment (about 20 hours per week) and it is expected that this responsibility is a priority.

If you have any questions about the process, please email the mascot advisor, Tyler Bill OR  any of the current Mascots at thebirds@bgsu.edu.
