Political utopia is topic of applied ethics and public policy workshop

The philosophy department will host the fourth annual Workshop in in Applied Ethics and Public Policy tomorrow and Saturday (April 25 and 26), in 208 Bowen-Thompson Student Union. With talks by visiting philosophers from around the country, events will run from 8:30 a.m. to 5:50 p.m. each day, and are free and open to the public.

This year’s topic is “Political Utopia: Promise or Peril?” Keynote speakers Dr. Jerry Gaus, of the University of Arizona, will address “Searching for the Ideal, and Feasible Ways to It,” at 2:15 p.m. Friday; and Dr. David Estlund, of Brown University, will speak on “Prime Justice,” at 2 p.m. Saturday.

‘Once on This Island’ highlights Firelands youth theatre festival

Tickets go on sale at 1 p.m. Monday (April 28) for the Caryl Crane Youth Theatre production of “Once on This Island,” a Caribbean musical adaptation of the fairy tale “The Little Mermaid.”

Filled with song and dance, “Once on This Island” tells the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who rescues, nurses to health and falls in love with a boy named Daniel from the wealthy side of the island. When Daniel is returned to his people, the gods who rule the island guide Ti Moune on a quest to test the strength of her love against the powerful forces of prejudice, hatred and death.

Featuring a cast of actors ages 6-12 from area schools, the musical is choreographed and directed by Brian Marshall, Caryl Crane artistic director, and sponsored by Goodwill Industries.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. May 2 and 3 and at 2 p.m. May 4 on the McBride Auditorium stage at BGSU Firelands. Tickets range from $6-$12 and can be purchased at the box office or by calling 419-372-0747.

“Once on This Island” is the anchor production of the fourth annual Ronald M. Ruble New Play Festival, on May 3. The festival presents unpublished works for children and youth identified through a national search. The three finalists’ work will be performed in a staged reading by the Caryl Crane Theatre Troupe of young actors, and the winner will receive a $500 check from Goodwill Industries of Erie, Huron, Ottawa and Sandusky Counties.
