Fugett honored for service to students

BOWLING GREEN, O.—Laney Fugett, a lecturer and faculty adviser for the visual communication technology (VCT) program at Bowling Green State University, received the President's Award for Academic Advising of Undergraduate Students at the Faculty Excellence Awards April 16.

The award recognizes individuals and units in the BGSU learning community that contribute to undergraduate students' educational development through effective academic advising. Fugett's award included a $1,000 cash payment.

In their letters of recommendation, Fugett’s advisees consistently pointed out her dedication and willingness to do whatever necessary to help them succeed, from finding alternate ways to meet after hours to emailing them during the semester to check on their progress.

“Laney Fugett has done exceptional work to make sure that her students go down the correct path for success,” wrote VCT senior Alexandra Miller. “From the classroom to being an adviser, Laney puts forth more effort than necessary to see her students succeed, and does so with a smile on her face and willingness to help.”

“She is always looking out for me and giving me the push I need to take care of my studies and myself,” noted VCT student Libby Wasserbauer. “I can’t thank her enough for everything she has done to help me.”

Fugett says she believes in a mindset that integrates teaching and advice with every student interaction.

“If there is a resource I can give to a student to help them on their path, I will happily assist them – an alumni name, a website to investigate or even a job shadow site recommendation,” she explained. “I believe we are here to not just provide them with information, but to help them take ownership of their education and future career.”
