The Office of General Counsel supports the teaching, research, and service missions of the University by providing legal advice and representation to Bowling Green State University, its constituent units, trustees and officers. The Office provides legal services to the various units throughout the University in a broad range of areas such as: ethics, employment, labor, contracts, intellectual property, public records laws, policy development, and a wide range of other issues, but does not provide legal advice to employees or students relating to personal matters. Students seeking legal advice may contact Student Legal Services. The Office of General Counsel also receives and responds to all public records requests of the University while also maintaining the University Policy Register. In addition, educational trainings on legal topics are also provided upon request.
The Ohio Attorney General is the statutory legal advisor for all universities in the state. The Office of General Counsel acts under the authority of the Attorney General with each attorney in the Office appointed as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Ohio. Private law firms may be appointed by the Attorney General, as special counsel, in responding to litigation or other specialized legal needs of the University.
University officials are encouraged to contact the Office of General Counsel with legal questions. Early communication will avoid complications that could later arise.
