Mini Biography: Dr. Emily Barnes, one of the few individuals in the country to hold a Doctorate in Clinical Laboratory Science (DCLS), has been a dedicated Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) since 2007. Her journey in medical laboratory science, which began at Bowling Green State University (BGSU), reflects her deep-seated passion for science and her commitment to making a positive impact in healthcare.

After earning her degree from BGSU, Dr. Barnes began her career as a generalist in a 150-bed rural hospital. Her career trajectory took a significant turn when she was appointed to manage a cancer center laboratory. Working closely with esteemed pathologists and oncologists, she not only refined her skills but also developed a keen understanding of the need for a collaborative approach in complex patient case assessments. This experience led her to the concept of Diagnostic Management Teams, inspiring her to pursue a Doctorate in Clinical Laboratory Science (DCLS).  at UTMB Galveston, the first NAACLS accredited DCLS program in the country.

During her inpatient clinical rotations at UTMB Galveston, Dr. Barnes honed her expertise in laboratory test consultation and recommendation, collaborating closely with physicians across various specialties. She played a pivotal role in diagnostic management teams (DMTs), within the pathology, internal medicine, nephrology, and colorectal surgery departments. The clinical laboratory perspective that Dr. Barnes provided was essential in recommending appropriate laboratory testing, a critical aspect of patient care.

Motivated by the critical understaffing among healthcare professions, Dr. Barnes transitioned into higher education with a mission to bring viability to the essential role of laboratory medicine along with other areas of healthcare. As a proud faculty member at Bowling Green State University and one of the few DCLS professionals in the nation, she is committed to educating and inspiring others about the laboratory profession and other healthcare disciplines. Her passion for education, combined with her extensive clinical experience and academic achievements, establishes her as a pivotal and influential clinical laboratory professional and educator.

Education:

  • 2007:Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Science with a minor in Chemistry from BGSU.
  • 2018: Master's Degree in Interdisciplinary Gerontology, focusing on aging, exercise, and Medicare policy.
  • 2023: Doctorate in Clinical Laboratory Science (DCLS) from the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, Texas.
