Hopes and Fears of First-Generation College Students: General Studies Writing 1100/1110 as a Site of Success in Transitioning to BGSU

This session invites first-generation college students to gather to share their hopes and fears as they embark upon their college career at BGSU.  Facilitators of this session, Professor Lee Nickoson and Dr. Susan Carlton, will share research in composition pedagogy, which details some of the obstacles first-generation college students may encounter and shows how they can best overcome these obstacles. Learn how the first and second semester writing classroom can become a site where you can learn the habits of mind and ability to “self-author,” providing another opportunity to help transition to life at the university.

Cardboard Canoe Race

6:00 pm Student Recreation Center Pond

The Cardboard Canoe Race will consist of student participants (at least 2 people on a team, with a max of 6 people on a team) making a human-powered boat made out of ONLY corrugated cardboard, duct tape and a splash of ingenuity.  The event gives you the opportunity to put theory into practice, use unconventional materials to solve problems and, hopefully create a boat that can swiftly maneuver through the pond without capsizing.A maximum of 10 teams can register.  Use the following link for registration: https://goo.gl/forms/xC9v2WSbMtZoL0Gl2
