Undergraduate Council

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure that proposals align with the university’s priorities for undergraduate education.
  • Consider the impact of proposals on units across the university.
  • Provide feedback to proposers to ensure that proposals are feasible and student-centered.
  • Vote on proposals in accordance with the Academic Charter.

Guiding Questions

  • Is there a student-centered reason for proposing this program clearly defined in the submitted materials?
  • Are the learning outcomes appropriate for the program and aligned with the institutional strategic priorities?
  • Do the learning outcomes and assessment map provide a clear overview of how courses map to learning outcomes and the specific strategies that will be used to assess the learning outcomes?
  • Do you anticipate that there will be other units affected that have not been previously addressed in the proposal?
  • Do you anticipate any potential unintended consequences (could include Financial Aid, Registration and Records, Advising, etc.)?
  • Does the proposal reflect shared governance principles?
  • Based on the proposal, has the unit effectively argued the viability of this program?

Most of the time, Undergraduate Council does not review proposals for new or modified courses. When a course has substantial impact on students across the university (General Studies Writing, for example), proposals may be referred to Undergraduate Council. In those cases, The Council will apply similar questions to those for new and modified programs.
