Strategies as You Begin Classes
The fall semester has officially started! Welcome to our new students—and welcome back to our returning Honors students. Our hope is that you will take this week to get settled in, explore new things on campus, and continue making connections within the community. Below are some tips, reminders, and advice for the first week from your Honors College advisors.
Get rest! With all the excitement and activities, it might be hard to take a break. Remember to practice self-care and pace yourself through this busy window.
Remember to eat! Fuel your body and your mind. If you feel overwhelmed by your dining options, the Honors College staff are happy to assist or connect you with a peer in Honors with tips. The best thing about this community is that you have a warm group of like-minded peers happy to support you. Set a goal to invite others to eat with you to get to know others and try out different venues.
Be Aware of your academic deadlines. There are certain times during the beginning of the semester you may still add/drop classes. Add/Drop deadlines can be found here: Fall 2025 Academic Calendar
Get Organized. Maybe you use a traditional paper planner, post-its, to-do lists, dry erase boards, or put everything on your phone… Whatever system works for you, take time this week to look over your syllabus and note the deadlines, tests/quizzes, and breaks. Some helpful apps to consider:
Forest App: celebrate focus and productivity by planting virtual trees while you work
Remember the Milk: comprehensive online to-do list
myHomework App: track assignments, deadlines, and class schedules (free with ads)
MyStudyLife app: their all-encompassing academic planner manages schedules, tasks, and exams across multiple devices
Remember to ask for help. Introduce yourself to your faculty at the end of class, stop by and chat with your RA, knock on your neighbor’s door and introduce yourself, or email your academic advisors and Life Design coaches. There’s an impressive team here to support you during your time at BGSU.
Be kind to yourself. Whether you are a new student or returning student, transitioning to a new semester will have its ups and downs. Give yourself (and others) some grace as we navigate this together.
Take a deep breath; you've got this! We'd love to see you this week at Popcorn Wednesday to hear about your exciting moments as well as your challenges. Or visit your Honors advisor in Founders 024 during a time convenient for you!
