MUSP Graduate Assistantship Descriptions

Assistantship needs may change during the course of the academic year. In some cases, more than one vacancy may exist for one of these positions.

Oboe (available Fall 2014)

The student selected for this position assists in applied and small ensemble instruction, as well as double reeds methods class and other duties as needed. Prerequisites include superior performance ability and record of successful teaching.

Bassoon (available Fall 2014)

The student selected for this position assists in applied and small ensemble instruction, as well as double reeds methods class and other duties as needed. Prerequisites include superior performance ability and record of successful teaching.

Flute (available Fall 2014)

The graduate student selected for this position assists in applied and small ensemble instruction, as well as flute methods class. Prerequisites include a superior performance ability and record of successful teaching.

Clarinet (available Fall 2015)

The graduate student selected for this position assists in applied and small ensemble instruction, as well as clarinet class. Prerequisites include a superior performance ability and record of successful teaching.

Saxophone (available Fall 2014)

The graduate student selected for this position assists in applied and small ensemble instruction. Prerequisites include a superior performance ability and record of successful teaching.

Trumpet (available Fall 2014)

The graduate student selected for these positions assist in applied and small ensemble instruction and play in the Graduate Brass Quintet. Prerequisites include a superior performance ability and record of successful teaching.

Tuba/Euphonium (available Fall 2015)

The graduate student selected for this position assists in applied and small ensemble instruction, Tuba/Euphonium and Brass/Percussion Ensembles, and plays in the Graduate Brass Quintet. Prerequisites include a superior performance ability and record of successful teaching; either private studio or public/private school and ability to teach euphonium and/or tuba successfully in a studio/class situation.

French Horn (available Fall 2015)

The graduate student selected for this position assists in applied and small ensemble instruction, horn class, MuED Techniques Class and plays in the Graduate Brass Quintet. Prerequisites include a superior performance ability and record of successful teaching, either private studio or Public/Private school.

Trombone (available Fall 2014)

The graduate student selected for this position assists in applied and small ensemble instruction, trombone/tuba/euphonium class, and plays in the Graduate Brass Quintet. Prerequisites include a superior performance ability and record of successful teaching.

Percussion (available Fall 2014)

The graduate student chosen will demonstrate excellence of performance in all areas of percussion including keyboard, timpani, snare drum, and multiple percussion. A record of successful teaching is a plus. Typical duties may include applied instruction, small ensemble coaching, methods class, drumline instruction for the Falcon Marching Band and performance with chamber ensembles. Knowledge of jazz drumset and ethnic percussion is helpful.

Graduate String Quartet—Violin (available Fall 2014)
Graduate String Quartet—Viola (available Fall 2014)
Graduate String Quartet—Cello (available Fall 2015)

Prerequisites include superior performance ability, string quartet or other similar chamber ensemble experience, orchestral experience including section leadership and public performance experience. Typical duties include Graduate String Quartet presenting one on-campus and two off-campus performances per semester and section leader of appropriate instrument in Bowling Green Philharmonia (responsible for fingerings, bowings, sectionals, etc.)

Para-Voice (available Fall 2014)

The graduate students selected for these positions provide applied private and para-voice class instruction. Prerequisites include superior performance ability and record of any teaching. Performance in opera if cast is required. 

Choral Assistant (available Fall 2014)

Students selected for this position assist in the rehearsals and management of one or more choral ensembles as assigned by the director of Choral Activities. Ensembles include the Collegiate Chorale, A Cappella Choir, Men’s Chorus, University Choral Society and Women’s Chorus. They may also assist in the instruction of choral classes as assigned by the director of Choral Activities. Classes include methods, repertoire and conducting. Prerequisites include superior musicianship and record of successful teaching. Registration for Collegiate Chorale and University Choral Society is required. For majors only

Studio Piano/Piano Accompanying (available Fall 2014)

Graduate students chosen for these positions will accompany bachelor’s and master’s recitals, and possibly accompany in vocal literature class, or they may teach piano students at early and intermediate levels. Prerequisites include superior performing, sight-reading ability, excellent communication skills, knowledge of piano repertoire at early and intermediate levels, and record of successful accompanying. A requirement of this assistantship is to take Collaborative Techniques or a piano pedagogy course during the first year.

Orchestra Assistant (available Fall 2014)

Graduate students selected for these positions must have superior musicianship and learning skills, as well as a record of successful conducting and teaching. Duties as orchestral assistant include some office work including program notes, orchestra library work, learning scores, conducting rehearsals and sectionals as needed, attend conducting classes, teaching help sessions and some classes, and is in charge of orchestra set-up for rehearsals and concerts. Registration in the Bowling Green Philharmonia each semester is required. For majors only

Jazz (available Fall 2014)

Graduate students selected for these positions will assist professors with jazz music library maintenance, as well as grading and collation in one or more undergraduate jazz classes. If candidate has extensive performance experience he/she may be asked to coach one or more undergraduate jazz performance ensembles, and may be assigned duties with more than one jazz studies faculty. Prerequisites include experience in jazz performance, ability to organize material (library), and work with computers. An audition before the jazz faculty, as well as an interview, is required.

Guitar (available Fall 2014)

The graduate student selected for this position must have superior performing ability and a record of successful teaching. Typical duties may include guitar classes for non-majors, private applied guitar (for majors and non-majors) and coaching of guitar ensembles. Registration for applied guitar each semester is required.

Trinity United Methodist Church Intern (available Fall 2014)

The students selected for these positions (singers and keyboard players) will assist the music director in music outreach and preparation for the weekly services, recruit singers for Chancel Choir and the Praise Team, and guest soloists/ensembles for weekly music, perform administrative duties, including monitoring attendance of book scholarship recipients, and prepare brief monthly reports for the Staff/Parish Relations Committee, rehearse and perform with the Chancel Choir or Praise Team, attend weekly services and special events, introduce musicians prior to the performance at church, and express gratitude afterwards. One evening per week must be free for assistantship activities, and the student must arrange for covering assistantship responsibilities during University breaks. Student should be highly motivated, organized, self-starter and be able to anticipate needs early on. Conducting skills are desirable, but not required.
