Briyanna Moore (class of 2024) received an Honors College Grant to study peace, culture, and different perspectives of the 1945 Hiroshima bombing. The BGSU Peace Study trip that was offered at Hiroshima Jogakuin University was a 10-day excursion in summer 2023. However, while Briyanna was in Hiroshima, she learned the humanistic impacts of this bomb after it dropped; and how that changed the trajectory of Hiroshima as a city. Therefore, participating in this study abroad opportunity allowed her to think about different perspectives of the Hiroshima bombing, and to advocate and educate others on a narrative she had not heard before.

Briyanna practiced the critical thinking skills she learned during her time as an Honors student during and after the trip. Upon returning from Japan, Briyanna presented her work at the Global Engagement Conference. This experience boosted her confidence and allowed her to become a stronger public speaker, one of her goals from this school year. "Initially, I was not nervous to participate in this event, but as my time to speak came closer on the day of the event, I began feeling nervous yet excited," she says. Presenting at the Global Engagement Conference allowed Briyanna the space to share her story and critically reflect on her time in Hiroshima.

Her advice to other BGSU students considering an education abroad experience: "Simply do it! The fruit of taking a leap to learn something new in an unfamiliar environment is always worth it, and it will expose you to different perspectives and opportunities that you may not even anticipate!"
