Jim Meyer, a 1967 BGSU graduate, began his career in education with the Utica Community Schools, a school district of 28,000 students in suburban Detroit. After having completed his Master’s Degree in Guidance and Counseling at Wayne State University, Detroit, he left the Honors English classroom for a counseling position at Adlai Stevenson High School, Sterling Heights, Michigan, still with the Utica Schools. Chosen for a State of Michigan Education Grant, he designed the guidance and counseling model for gifted high school students for the state of Michigan. Specializing in the unique needs of the gifted and talented student, he became the first administrator and college counselor at the Utica Center for Mathematics, Science and Technology, a program created for high achieving students. At the same time, he served on the Michigan State University High School Admissions Advisory Council, and the Bowling Green State University High School Counselor Advisory Board. Meyer was honored to be Chairman of the Bowling Green State University Alumni Board of Trustees and numerous Class of ’67 reunion committees.

Following his retirement from the Utica Community Schools, Meyer joined the BGSU Admissions staff as Regional Admissions Counselor for the state of Michigan. In addition to his high school and college visitation duties, he was a regular speaker at national, state and local admissions conferences on the recruitment of gifted and talented students. Having concluded his nine-year experience with BGSU Admission, he is now in private college guidance practice, again serving select high achieving students.

He has received numerous awards for educational leadership including the co-authorship of the college guidebook, “Focus on Your Future”. He is also a high school hall of fame track and cross-country coach.

Along with his wife, Barbara, also a 1967 BGSU graduate, he enjoys their summer cottage in Lakeside, Ohio where Jim has served as Chairman of the Lakeside Association Board of Directors and President of the Lakeside Property Owners Association.  He has also won numerous Lakeside sailboat races in his boat, “Passing Marks”.
