The exercise programming specialization is designed to prepare students for a variety of careers based upon their interest. The curriculum is focused on 'hands-on' learning and the application of concepts that assists students with their transition into their chosen career or graduate program. The specialization is unique in that it allows students not only one, but two distinct field experiences, including a culminating internship that prepares students to enter the workforce with experience and confidence.   

Student Learning Outcomes

1. Display knowledge, skills, and abilities to screen, test, prescribe, motivate, counsel, educate, and individualize muscular strength and endurance, cardiorespiratory training, and/or other physical fitness and lifestyle programs for normal and special populations;

2. Understand the scientific bases of exercise programming, not limited to but including exercise physiology, human anatomy, biomechanics, care and prevention of injuries, safety and emergency procedures, and basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid for exercise settings;

3. Demonstrate use of administrative content, and facilities and equipment information in exercise programming.

The Exercise Science Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of the Allied Health Education Programs (Initial accreditation: March, 2013; Continuing accreditation; March, 2018). During the 2017-2018 academic year, the BGSU Exercise Science Program, Exercise Programming specialization, reported a 62% retention rate, and had a graduate placement rate of 81% at the time of graduation (6 employed within 1 year of graduation; 15 graduates - continuing their education; 5 graduates - undecided).
