2020 Honors and Awards

COVID-19 changed our interactions in Spring 2020 and created a new reality, in essence, a virtual reality. With social distancing at play and a completely online learning environment from March 20 to the end of the semester, the College of Musical Arts decided to host an online ceremony to honor its scholarship and award winners.

Here are the 2020 College of Musical Arts Honors and Awards including information about the scholarship and awards, the names of those for whom the awards are named, and the student recipients for the year.

Presser Undergraduate Scholar Award

This scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student with an overall GPA of 3.5 majoring in music, and is based solely on considerations of excellence in the areas of musicianship, scholarship, leadership, service and personality.
Tyler Schreiber

Winifred O. Stone Graduate Student Development Fund

This is award is given to students to help them expand their musical training through participation in events such as auditions, study abroad, etc. The recipient shall be a full-time graduate student in good academic standing.

Robert and Leona Fellers Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student at the College of Musical Arts with a minimum GPA of 3.0, involved in extracurricular or community organizations in either Muskingum County or while a student at BGSU.

The Richard S. James Memorial Scholarship

The recipient must be a junior, senior, or graduate student in the College of Musical Arts; have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.3 for undergraduate and 3.5 for graduate students; have demonstrated superior skill in written communication; and be a music history major or have demonstrated strong interest in this discipline.

Field-Starks Family Book Award

This award recognizes qualified full-time undergraduate students within the College of Musical Arts who are majoring in Music Performance with a minimum GPA of 3.0.

The BGSU JaFran Jones Award in Ethnomusicology

This is the inaugural year for this award to be presented. It is given to one or two outstanding undergraduate or graduate students, based on their accomplishments in scholarship and/or performance in ethnomusicology or world music.
Joseph Johnson and Adesina Odiduro

Jan Arthur and Herbert B. Van Gorder Memorial Trumpet Scholarship

This scholarship was established to support a trumpet player in the Falcon Marching Band. The recipient must be an undergraduate music major with a minimum GPA of 3.2.
Jenna Coffman

Carolyn Johnson Houk Scholarship

Mr. Jack Houk ’55 created the Carolyn Johnson Houk Scholarship to benefit students within the College of Musical Arts, in honor of his wife Carolyn. The recipient should be a musically talented undergraduate music major within the College of Musical Arts and hold a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Toledo Symphony Orchestra Composition Scholarship

Each year, two Toledo Symphony Composition Scholarships are to be awarded to incoming students in the Master of Music in Composition degree program. These awards recognize musical achievement in general and specifically, the potential for success in the area of orchestral composition. Each recipient of the scholarship is guaranteed a slot during the second year of their degree in the annual Toledo Symphony BGSU Student Composer Reading Session.

Dorothy Robertson Christensen Memorial Scholarship

The recipient of this scholarship shall be a full-time undergraduate student majoring in music education who has demonstrated overall academic excellence. Preference shall be given to students who have maintained at least a 3.0 grade point average and demonstrate financial need.

Natalie Katz Sternberg Music Education Scholarship

The recipient of this award must be a full-time student who is a rising junior or senior in the music education program at Bowling Green State University. Preference is given to students who are specializing in, or have specific interest in, the piano or violin. The selection is based on scholarship and involvement in professional service and professional growth activities indicating a commitment to music education.

Keith and Helene Dearborn Music Education Award

This award is given to a music education major who has made, or shows the potential to make, a significant contribution to the BGSU music education program, shown excellent musical and academic achievement, and exhibited those personal qualities essential for success as a teacher of general (classroom) music.

Elfreda M. Rusher Music Education Scholarship

The recipient of this scholarship must be a full-time undergraduate student in the College of Musical Arts majoring in music education. The recipient must be a rising junior or senior with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and a resident of Ohio.

Diane Inbody Pepple Scholarship in Music Education

The purpose of the Diane Inbody Pepple Scholarship in Music Education is to celebrate the life of Diane Inbody Pepple and to recognize student achievement in preparation for music education in public schools.

Heidi Fern Clausius Master’s in Music Scholarship 

This scholarship is awarded to a graduate student pursuing a master’s degree in any discipline in the College of Musical Arts. Strong preference should be given to a non-traditional student who has rediscovered their passion of music and desires to further their education to advance their career.

Dr. Richard Kennell Music Scholarship

This scholarship was created with money provided by friends, colleagues, alumni and donors to honor Dr. Richard Kennell and celebrate his retirement as Dean of the College of Musical Arts at Bowling Green State University in 2011. The scholarship will provide financial assistance to a student in the College of Musical Arts.

Dr. Paul Makara Violin Scholarship

Professor of Music Performance Studies
The recipient must be a violin student at the College of Musical Arts with a GPA of higher than 3.0 who, following an audition, has demonstrated a positive and professional attitude.
Cole Habekost and Gene Waldron

Jessica J. Walker Memorial Marching Band Scholarship 

Jessica Walker was a bachelor of science student majoring in chemistry. One of the main reasons she attended BGSU was to play in the marching band. Her parents set up this scholarship to honor their daughter. The recipient must be a female marching band member, who is a full-time student with a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Vince Polce Scholarship

The Vince Polce Scholarship was created to support students who are Music Education majors who are active participants in the BGSU University Bands’ programs and must have a minimum 3.5 GPA.
Tyler Schrieber and Christian Bush

Misamore Marching Band Scholarship

Originally from Findlay, Ohio, Bruce and Janet Misamore both attended BGSU. 
As an undergraduate Bruce was the recipient of a Music Talent Award, and was a member of the Falcon Marching Band and the Symphonic Band mostly as a non-music major. He was the president of Kappa Kappa Psi, the band honorary fraternity, and served for several years after graduation as a member of the Alumni Band Board of Directors, including a term as the organization’s president.

John A. Hage Falcon Marching Band Leadership Award

John Hage had a lifelong history of supporting various charitable organizations to include those that promoted the development of musical talents with the disciplines of both musical education and instrumental performance. It is the family’s intention that the gift support initiatives of the BGSU Falcon Marching Band and promote leadership.

Dr. Richard and Annette S. Ecker Award in Instrumental Music Education 

This book award is presented to outstanding undergraduate students in memory of Dr. Richard Ecker, a member of the BGSU instrumental music faculty for 17 years, and in honor of Mrs. Annette Ecker, who has enhanced the quality of life at the University and in the community through selfless and dedicated volunteer service.

Joseph and Zola Buford Scholarship in Music

This award is given to a student majoring in voice who is enrolled in both the choral and opera areas. The recipient must exemplify excellence in voice.

Cathy McCambridge Memorial Scholarship

The recipient must be a full-time rising sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in voice with a minimum of a 3.0 GPA.

Edwin and Karolynn Betts Performance Award

This scholarship is awarded to a full-time undergraduate student in the brass area with a preference for trumpet who exhibits exceptional skill and technique as a musical performer. The recipient must be a rising junior or senior in good academic standing with an overall 2.5 grade point average. Involvement with performance activities in the College, University, community or the profession must also be demonstrated.

Bushong Trumpet Scholarship

Brian and Sara Bushong established the Bushong Trumpet Scholarship because they believe that music and performing had a positive life-long presence in their lives. It is their wish to reward the hard work and talent of a BGSU trumpet student as he/she pursues their love of music.

Herbert Spencer Horn Students Fund

Awarded to a full-time undergraduate or graduate student studying applied horn in the College of Musical Arts.

C. Elizabeth Cobb Memorial Fund

This award was established for students in the College of Musical Arts who are piano majors and display exceptional promise in the area of collaborative piano studies.

Bernice Ely Coulon Special Achievement Awards

The recipients must be enrolled as full-time music majors in the College of Musical Arts at least one semester of the following academic year, and demonstrate outstanding progress and potential for future growth in the areas of musicianship, scholarship and leadership.

E. Printy Arthur Jazz Studies Award

Associate Professor of Music Performance Studies, Director of Jazz Activities
This award was created due to Mr. Arthur’s lifelong love of jazz to assist the students of the University’s exceptional Jazz Studies Program. The award is to be presented to a full-time jazz studies student.

Bob Sebo Endowed Jazz Studies Scholarship

This scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in the College of Musical Arts. Preference will be given to a jazz major. The student must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 or higher.

Bernice R. Shanklin Music Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in the College of Musical Arts with preference given to saxophonists majoring in jazz or jazz majors.

The BGSU MTNA Collegiate Chapter received a sizable grant from the Music Teachers National Association to help commission compositions for beginning piano students. 

For the Great Lakes Regional NATS Auditions held at BGSU on March 7, 2020, the following students placed or advanced to Nationals: Jhane Perdue, 1st place winner, Upper Classical Third year College Women; Brianna England, 2nd place winner, Advanced College Women; Crystal Lau, Advanced College Women, qualified to compete in the National Round of Competition in Knoxville, Tennessee 2020.

Joseph Johnson – CURS grant in the fall, accepted into Indiana University’s MM program in ethnomusicology

Adesina Odiduro – Second place for best presentation at the African Graduate Student Association Research Conference at Michigan State University.
