Auditions

Audition Procedure

String Auditions will take place on Monday, August 22. Sign-up sheets will be posted on the board outside the Orchestra office, room 1006/1008 on Friday, August 19 at 9 a.m. Rooms will be assigned and listed on the sign-up sheet. Dr. Emily Freeman Brown and members of the applied string faculty will conduct auditions.

Orchestral Wind and Percussion Auditions will take place Sunday evening, August 21 and Monday afternoon, August 22. Sign-up sheets will be posted on the board outside the Orchestra office, room 1006/1008 on Friday, August 19 at 9 a.m. Rooms will be assigned and listed on the sign-up sheet. Dr. Emily Freeman Brown will judge the auditions, with input from the applied wind and percussion faculty.

Note: Incoming freshmen audition on Monday, August 22 between 4-6 PM.

Orchestra is open to all BGSU students by audition.

Audition Schedule

Sunday, August 21
6:00-10:00 pm: Orchestral Wind auditions. Students may sign up for a time on the board outside of room 1006/1008. Please audition for any auxiliary instrument you may play such as piccolo or bass clarinet using extra time slots.

Monday, August 22
1:30-4:45 pm: String auditions. Rooms to be assigned.

4:00-6:00 pm: Dr. Brown finishes orchestra wind/percussion auditions for those who did not play an audition on Sunday.

6:30-9:00 pm: Orchestra percussion auditions

Tuesday, August 23
Afternoon/evening: Ensemble rosters are posted on the board outside of room 1012.

 

Fall 2016 Audition Materials

String Auditions:

  1. Download the excerpts for your instrument. Violinists may select either violin I or II according to their preference. Make sure that you listen to the excerpts so that you know the correct tempos and style. To help you prepare for your orchestra audition a link to a recording can be accessed here. The piece is Edward Elgar's Introduction and Allegro. You may find other versions of it on YouTube.
  2. Also bring a prepared solo with contrasting lyrical and technical passages that best demonstrate your level.

Notes for the auditions: When playing the excerpts it is not necessary to count through resets that are longer than a bar or two. Strive for good counting, rhythm, intonation and the correct style for each piece.

Winds, Brass and Percussion:

  1. Download the excerpts for your instruments. Please prepare 2 to 3 excerpts. Note on preparing the excerpts: Please make sure that you listen to the excerpts so that you know the correct tempos and style.
  2. Bring a prepared solo to perform in addition to the excerpts.
    **Percussion: please prepare all excerpts at the link below. Percussionists do not need to prepare a solo.
