Auditions

Audition Procedure

String Auditions will take place on Monday, August 25. Sign-up sheets will be posted on the board outside the Orchestra office, room 1006/1008 no later than Friday, August 22. Rooms will be assigned and listed on the sign-up sheet. Dr. Emily Freeman Brown and members of the applied string faculty will conduct auditions.

Orchestral Wind and Percussion Auditions will take place Sunday evening, August 24 and Monday afternoon, August 25. Sign-up sheets will be posted on the board outside the Orchestra office, room 1006/1008 no later than Friday, August 22. Rooms will be assigned and listed on the sign-up sheet. Dr. Emily Freeman Brown will judge the auditions, with input from the applied wind and percussion faculty.

 

Audition Schedule

Sunday, August 24
6:00-9:00 pm: Orchestral Wind auditions. Students may sign up for a time on the board outside of room 1006/1008. Please audition for any auxiliary instrument you may play such as piccolo or bass clarinet using extra time slots.

Note: Incoming Freshman will need to audition on Monday since New Student Orientation activities are held Sunday evening.)

Monday, August 25
1:30-4:45 pm: String auditions. Rooms to be assigned.

4:00-6:30 pm: Dr. Brown finishes orchestra wind/percussion auditions for those who did not play an audition on Sunday.

Tuesday, August 26
Afternoon/evening: Ensemble rosters are posted on the board outside of room 1012.

 

Fall 2014 Audition Materials

String Auditions:

  • One prepared solo or etude that demonstrates both musical and technical abilities. (Excerpts from two selections are acceptable if needed to demonstrate contrast.)
  • Required orchestral excerpts downloaded for your instrument from the Orchestra audition web site (below).
  • Violinists have the choice of choosing to audition for first or second violin, or both if they would like.

Winds and Brass:

  • One prepared solo or etude that demonstrates both musical and tehcnical abilities. (Excerpts from two selections are acceptable if needed to demonstrate contrast.)
  • Two or three additional standard orchestral excerpts of your choosing.
  • Required orchestral excerpts downloaded for your instrument from the Orchestra audition web site (below).
  • If you prepare an auxiliary instrument such as piccolo or E-flat clarinet, please audition on that instrument as well, signing up for an additional time slot per each instrument.

Required orchestra excerpts for all instruments for Fall 2014 auditions will be posted by August 1, 2014.
