Whitney presents A&S Distinguished Faculty Lecture

Lynn Whitney, area head of photography, will present "With So Many Images, Why Would One Matter?" for the College of Arts & Sciences Distinguished Faculty Lecture. Whitney will speak at 4 p.m. today (Oct. 22) in the Bowen-Thompson Student Union Theater.

According to Whitney, millions of pictures are made and shared in culture every day. Taking photographs is a part of our daily lives and functions as shorthand, a note taker for what we think and want to matter. The debate about value and attention paid to photographs has been reignited and students are again curious about the roots of this practice we take for granted. What makes a picture, one that lingers longer than the 1,000th of a second it took to make it?

Whitney will discuss some contemporary photographers and others from earlier times, and reveal what has sustained her personal practice as a teacher and artist in the wide-open field of photography.

A reception will follow her presentation.
