Loan Deferment Form Processing
How BGSU helps with loan deferment
The Office of Registration and Records plays an important role in student loan deferment by reporting enrollment information to the National Student Clearinghouse (NSC). Throughout each semester, BGSU submits reports of students’ enrollment statuses to the Clearinghouse.
The Clearinghouse then:
- Provides enrollment verifications to lenders
- Reports enrollment to the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS)
Because of this process, most students enrolled at BGSU are automatically placed in loan deferment while they remain in school.
Paperless deferment
Most lending agencies that work with the Clearinghouse also participate in a paperless deferment process. This means:
- You do not need to fill out deferment forms.
- You simply call your lender to request deferment.
- Your lender will verify your enrollment through the Clearinghouse and determine eligibility under their guidelines.
When a paper form may be required
Sometimes a deferment request isn’t automatically processed. For example:
- If you registered after the first enrollment report (first day of the term)
- If you stopped attending BGSU in a previous semester and then re-enrolled
In these cases, your enrollment may not be reported until the next Clearinghouse update (sent about every 30 days).
What to do if you receive a notice from your lender
If your lender contacts you and you believe you should be in deferment:
- Check enrollment timing. If you enrolled within three days of the start of the term or later, you may need to provide proof of enrollment. Log into MyBGSU to obtain an Enrollment Verification Letter and send it to your lender. Instructions to obtain enrollment verification letter
- Contact your lender. If your lender does not accept the Enrollment Verification Letter, call to see if they received a deferment form from the Clearinghouse since sending their notice.
- Contact the Clearinghouse. If deferment is still not processed, call the Clearinghouse directly at 703-742-4200. A representative can confirm when your deferment form was received and certified, and to which lenders your enrollment status was reported. In emergencies, the Clearinghouse can fax an enrollment verification to your lender and work with them to prioritize processing.
- Send forms to BGSU if needed. If your status is still not updated, send any deferment forms from your lender to registrar@bgsu.edu.
