The Wm. T. Jerome Library
Mural Restoration Project
The Jerome Library mural, the largest piece of public artwork on campus, stands as a striking testament to Bowling Green State University’s dedication to fostering creativity, culture, and community. Created by esteemed artist-in-residence Donald Drumm in the summer of 1966, the mural was a key component of President William T. Jerome’s initiative to enhance the campus environment. Over the years, it has become a cherished part of University Libraries' legacy and a recognized emblem of BGSU.
However, the passage of time and exposure to the elements have dulled the mural's once-vibrant colors, diminishing its prominence and impact. Restoring the Jerome Library mural is crucial to reinvigorating this iconic feature, ensuring it remains a proud symbol of BGSU’s identity. The $1 million restoration project is set to begin in April 2025 and is slated for completion in November 2025, playing a pivotal role in preserving this essential piece of campus history.

About the Campaign
The mural project extends beyond a basic paint touch-up and cleaning, focusing on restoring and preserving this iconic public artwork for the long term. The restoration will include essential concrete repairs, tuckpointing, repainting, repairing cracks, stabilizing loose paint, and applying protective sealants to prevent environmental damage, ensuring the mural remains vibrant and well-preserved for the future. In addition to funding the mural restoration, contributions to this campaign will also support a second phase of improvements to the Jerome Library's interior. These enhancements may include modernized lighting, updated exhibit spaces, and other upgrades designed to create a state-of-the-art academic library that supports student success and celebrates BGSU's commitment to innovation and excellence.
Don Drumm on Campus
Donald Drumm was the first artist in residence at Bowling Green State University from 1965 to 1971. The Wm T. Jerome Library mural, a striking campus landmark visible from miles away, was created by Drumm, who also designed murals for the Saddlemire Student Services, Psychology, and Education buildings. His artwork remains preserved across various locations on campus, and he continues to produce new pieces from his studio in Akron, Ohio.
“The Jerome Library mural is a cherished part of our campus, representing the creativity and history that bind our community together. This restoration project is an opportunity for our alumni and friends to unite in preserving this legacy, ensuring that it continues to inspire and resonate with future generations.”
