Student Loan Repayment
5 steps for managing your loans after college
Taking the time to learn how loan repayment works will help you feel more confident and able to repay your loans successfully.
- Find your federal student loans on your studentaid.gov account and find out who your loan servicer is.
- Check with Student Financial Aid about any private loans you may have borrowed while at BGSU.
- Check your credit report to identify any other private student loans you may have borrowed at another college.
You are required to complete exit counseling if you have a federal student loan whether you have graduated, left college or are no longer enrolled at least half-time in a degree or certificate program. Exit counseling provides the information you need to manage your loans successfully.
- Find out when your grace period(s) end.
- Find out when your first payment is due and how much the bill will be.
- ALWAYS keep your contact information up to date with your loan servicer.
- There are several repayment plans. Contact your servicer to find the one that works for you or to change your repayment plan.
- Use the Federal Student Aid Loan Simulator to help figure out what plan is right for you.
- Get in the habit of repaying your loans on time. Doing so will help you establish good credit, which can be important when looking for a job, renting an apartment or buying a car. Good credit can also lead to lower interest rates and creates more options for you in the future.
