4. CURS Summer Grant Application Round is now open

Date and Time: At 5 p.m. on Monday, April 1.

Apply for the CURS Summer Grant.

Description: The application round for the CURS Summer Grant is now open with a submission deadline of Monday the 1st of April 2024 (one-week extension is possible upon request by email to cmora@bgsu.edu). Applications can be submitted online under “Summer CURS Grant”.

Undergraduate research/scholarly/creative projects with a faculty mentor in any discipline are funded with up to $500 for the project cost ($750 for a group project of 3-5 students). Each student is expected to work 23 hours per week on the project for 10 weeks during the summer semester and will receive a stipend of up to $2,500 for their work paid out in installments for the duration of the project. Start dates are flexible based upon project needs.

Application consists of:

  • Online form (student(s) information, faculty mentor(s) information, general project information)
  • Project narrative (2-3 pages including project title, introduction, scholarly question/topic, description of what student(s) is/are planning to do for the project, anticipated outcomes and brief discussion of how the project’s anticipated outcomes related to the project’s scholarly question/topic and how they fit into the current state of the project’s discipline)
  • Budget (itemized list of anticipated purchases with individual costs as well as the total amount requested)
  • Reference Letter(s) by faculty mentor(s) indicating their support of the student and the project

Description: Mental Health First Aid is a skills-based training that teaches people how to identify, understand and respond to signs and symptoms of a mental health or substance use challenge in adults ages 18 and over. 11. Invited Book Talk with Dr. Emily Edwards '21

Invited Book Talk with Dr. Edwards.

Description: Join Emily Lynell Edwards, Ph.D., as she discusses her book, "Digital Islamophobia: Tracking A Far-Right Crisis" (De Gruyter, 2023) which explores far-right, anti-Muslim networks on Twitter and how these communities grow, develop and circulate hate-speech. Digital Islamophobia details how far-right politics are increasingly transnationalized among American, German, Indian and Nigerian users and provides policy-makers, researchers and scholars with a potential road-map to stem the tide of online extremism. Emily Lynell Edwards, a 2021 graduate of the American Culture Studies Doctoral Program at BGSU, is an Assistant Professor of Digital Humanities and Educational Technologist at St. Francis College in Brooklyn, NY. She currently serves as co-director of the grant Digital Humanities Across the Curriculum (DHAC), funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).

Description: Please join the Department of WRLD for a public reading by our Max Kade Writer in Residence at BGSU, Katherina Braschel.

Ms. Braschel was born in Salzburg, Austria and lives and works in Vienna. She is the recipient of numerous literary prizes and honors and is teaching a course in creative writing in German at BGSU this semester.

She will be reading from her 2020 book entitled "Es fehlt viel" [There's a Lot Missing] and from her forthcoming novel "Heim holen" [Getting Home]. The translations are by Dr. Geoffrey Howes, professor emeritus in German.

Description: Try Army ROTC as an elective with no service obligation! You will have one class a week with no basic training required.

Scholarships and other monetary support are available when you join BGSU Army ROTC, which allows you to focus on your education by relieving some of the financial pressure. You will graduate with a respected and secure career path as an Army Officer and with less debt for the school years your scholarship covers. You are eligible to apply for a ROTC scholarship—which could get you up to 100% tuition coverage and a $420 a month stipend and $600 a semester for books. You may also be qualified to receive free room and board from BGSU if you contract with Army ROTC and have a 3.0 GPA.

Standard requirements for ROTC scholarships:

  • Be a U.S. citizen
  • Be at least 17 and under 31 in year of commissioning
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Have a College GPA of at least 2.50
  • Have taken the SAT or ACT
  • Take the current Army physical fitness test
  • Meet the physical weight and height requirements
  • Agree to accept a commission and serve in the Army, Army Reserve or Army National Guard

This course will look at slasher films released in the twentieth century by examining the timely themes and topics that they contained. See how these slasher films were influenced by major happenings in the world, as well as how American culture (amongst others) was influenced by the films themselves. This course fulfills the College of Arts and Sciences Multidisciplinary Component (MDC) requirement.

5. Spanish for Educators- Fall 2024

Date and Time: From 9:30-10:45 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Description: SPAN 2030—1001: “Spanish for Educators” aims to help BGSU teacher candidates better serve the growing population of Latinx students. From 2011-2021, there was a 76% increase in the Hispanic student population in Ohio (ODE Facts and Figures 2022). This class will familiarize teachers with US varieties of Spanish, equipping them with the phrases necessary for basic classroom conversation, acquainting them with the concept of translanguaging and helping them understand ways to incorporate this practice into their classes. The class will also train students on how to effectively use Google Translate and ChatGPT to communicate with parents (and avoid insulting them as AI defaults to an informal register). We will also examine Latinx family cultural practices to better understand different cultural approaches to education. The class is designed for all teachers, counselors and administrators, pre-K, elementary, middle and secondary levels.

Description: WS 2000 403W 41013 - Intro to Women's Studies is being offered online during the second six-week summer session June 24 to Aug. 2. This course is an interdisciplinary survey of the new scholarship on women. Emphasis on the interconnectedness of gender, class and ethnicity in women's experiences and viewpoints from an arts and humanities perspective. This course will introduce students to the field of Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies from humanistic modes of inquiry and interpretation. Students successfully completing this class will exit with sharper skills of cultural and textual analysis. 1. Poet Rachel Wiley

Date and Time: From 12:15-12:50 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26.

Description: Ms. Wiley, a queer, biracial poet, performer and body-positive activist from Columbus, Ohio, has competed in multiple National Poetry Slam Competitions and was a finalist twice in 2011. She has toured nationally, performing at slam venues, colleges and festivals including the 2014 Geraldine Dodge Poetry Festival in Newark, New Jersey. Ms. Wiley’s work has been featured in the Huffington Post, Everyday Feminism, Frigg Magazine, Drunken Boat, Drunk in a Midnight Choir, Nailed Magazine and PBS NewsHour. Her first full-length collection of poems, Fat Girl Finishing School, was published by Timber Mouse Press in 2014 and her collections Nothing Is Okay (2018) and Revenge Body (2022) were published by Button Poetry.
