2. Nominate an administrative staff member for the Spirit of BG award

The Administrative Staff Council recognizes monthly administrative staff members who are caught showing "The Spirit of BG" as defined by any of the core values of BGSU:

4. PaperCut (printing) outages scheduled for Dec. 19 & Dec. 20

The PaperCut Printing Service will be unavailable from approximately 4-6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 19 and Wednesday, Dec. 20 while Information Technology Services (ITS) performs an upgrade. Please do not log into or try to access the system during this time frame. During the upgrade period, all functions related to campus printing (offices, labs, etc.) will be unavailable.

5. Falcon Fan Pregame at the Quick Lane Bowl in Detroit!

Get ready to cheer on Falcon Football at the Quick Lane Bowl!

Don’t miss the Falcon Fan Pregame as Bowling Green State University gets ready to take on the University of Minnesota. Join the incredible experience as the Falcons make their second straight appearance in the Quick Lane Bowl! The Pregame will be hosted at the Gridiron Club inside Ford Field from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 26. The Falcon Fan Pregame registration includes lunch, non-alcoholic beverages, giveaways and plenty of fun. A cashless bar will be available.

Need a ride to the stadium? BGSU Athletics will provide a bus from BGSU to Detroit for $50 per person additionally.

6. Join the How Learning Works CFE Book Club!

Have you ever wondered what the research says about how we learn? Would you like to know more about specific evidence-based practices you can implement in your classroom to facilitate your students’ learning? Join the Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE) for their spring 2024 book club that will discuss the book, “How Learning Works: Eight Research-Based Principles for Smart Teaching.” Facilitated by Amy Cook, teaching professor for the English Department, this community will meet via Zoom once a month to discuss the book as well as ideas for implementing research-based practices in your specific teaching contexts at BGSU. All BGSU faculty, adjunct instructors, graduate students, and staff are welcomed and encouraged to participate in this learning community. Participants in this group will be provided with a hard-backed copy of the book.

7. Join the semester-long Service-Learning Community of Practice

Service-learning has the power to transform student learning and bridge the gap between college campuses and the community. If you are interested in learning more about how you can integrate service-learning into your courses or want to strengthen your existing service-learning courses, we encourage you to join the Service-Learning Community of Practice, co-hosted by the Center for Faculty Excellence and the C. Raymond Marvin Center for Student Leadership and Civic Engagement. Facilitated by Hoang Do, the assistant director of the Marvin Center, this Community of Practice will meet in-person seven times throughout the semester to explore how you can integrate meaningful service-learning experiences into the curriculum, build sustainable community partnerships and incorporate critical reflection into the service-learning process. All BGSU faculty, adjunct instructors, graduate students and staff are welcomed and encouraged to participate in this community.

1. Female athletes can earn a $5 gift card!

Current college athletes who identify as female are invited to participate in a study about how collegiate female athletes think and feel about their bodies. Participants can earn a $5 Amazon gift card in exchange for completing an online survey. Here is some additional information about the survey to help you decide if you want to participate:

  • This survey will be voluntary. No one is forced to participate.
  • It will be confidential. No one will be asked to provide information like their name, address or school ID number.
  • Your responses will NOT be shared with anyone else, including your coach or teammates.
  • This survey will take about 30 minutes to complete.
  • Everyone who completes the survey will earn a $5 Amazon gift card! To receive your gift card, you will be asked to provide your contact information. Your contact information will also remain confidential.

2. Need food assistance?

Need assistance with food? The Dean of Students is here to help. We offer two programs that can help you with that.

You can also stop in during our drop-in hours from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday through Friday in University Hall 303 and one of our staff members can assist you.

3. Student health insurance requirement

The spring health insurance requirement is due Jan. 1. To see if this applies to you, check your ‘To Dos’ in your MyBGSU. There will be a $1,457 charge to your spring tuition bill as well. To waive or enroll in the spring/summer insurance, go to the Quick Links section on your MyBGSU, select ‘Insurance Requirement’ and fill out the appropriate form. If you have other insurance that meets BGSU requirements and waive prior to the deadline, the $1,457 insurance fee will be cleared from your tuition bill.

1. BGSU VPN/Pulse Secure upgrade to begin Dec. 14

Beginning at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 14, Information Technology Services (ITS) will release an upgrade for the BGSU VPN/Pulse Secure application to update it to a newer version. This upgrade brings the application up to date with BGSU’s latest standards and provides increased network security and compatibility with newer operating systems.

If you are connected to the VPN when the upgrade is released (on or off-campus) you will be briefly disconnected. Please wait 2-3 minutes before attempting to reconnect to the network. For the upgrade to be successfully applied, you must be connected to either VPN/Pulse Secure, eduroam or the BGSU wired network. The upgrade will attempt to complete the next time your device is connected to one of these networks after the release at 5 p.m. on Dec. 14.

2. CFE workshop: BGP assessment process discussion

Are you teaching a Bowling Green Perspective (BGP) course? Do you have questions about the BGP assessment process? Join this virtual workshop, hosted by the Center for Faculty Excellence and the Office of Academic Assessment, to review the BGP learning outcomes assessment process and discuss best practices and lessons learned from the general education assessment process. Facilitated by Dr. Jessica Turos, the associate director of Academic Assessment, this workshop will walk you through all the steps to submit BGP assessment data via Canvas.

These workshops will be held online via Zoom on the following dates and times during the spring 2024 semester: from 11 a.m. to noon on Jan. 4, from 4 to 5 p.m. on Jan. 9, from 11 a.m. to noon on April 10, and from 3 to 4 p.m. on April 14.

Join the Center for Faculty Excellence to learn about Faculty180, the faculty activity reporting system that is used for reappointment, tenure and promotion, as well as merit, accreditation, reporting and other processes. 5. Find out more about the Spring 2024 CFE Communities of Practice!

Each academic year, the Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE) works with faculty associates and campus partners to develop and deliver innovative and timely Communities of Practice. CFE Communities of Practice include book clubs, writing groups, podcast listening clubs, Learning Communities, and other semester- and year-long learning opportunities. The CFE will be offering seven different Communities of Practice this spring covering a range of topics including culturally and socially responsible assessments, the “Science of Reading,” how learning works, service-learning, student engagement and motivation, teaching and learning with AI, and using data to support equity and student success.

7. ITS spring 2024 start-of-term freeze

Information Technology Services (ITS) will be placing a freeze on operating system upgrades and replacement device installation requests during the first two weeks of the spring semester (Jan. 8-19) to prioritize support for the start of the semester and new hire devices. 8. Join the CFE to find out more about Canvas New Quizzes!

New Quizzes is Canvas’s new assessment engine that integrates with Canvas and will be replacing Classic Quizzes. New Quizzes offers new features, question types and a new interface. Join the Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE) for their virtual workshop, Getting Started with Canvas New Quizzes, to learn about this new tool. In this workshop, you will learn how to create questions in an item bank and how to utilize the item bank in a quiz.

9. The CFE's Active Learning Certificate Program is now accepting applications!

The CFE’s Active Learning Certificate Program is now accepting applications for spring 2024. During this 2-month long hybrid program, you will reflect on your current teaching practices, develop a plan for incorporating active learning into your teaching, and practice implementing active learning strategies into your classroom instruction. After successfully completing the program, you will receive a digital certificate and badge noting your accomplishment. Receipt of the Active Learning Certificate allows you to be pre-assigned to an active learning classroom.

10. Call for Honors 4000 seminar proposals

Faculty are invited to submit proposals for HNRS 4000 seminars. The one credit seminars explore topics that intersect with issues of diversity, equity, inclusion and privilege, and are intended for first-year and upper-class students.

Spring 2025 seminar proposals are due Friday, Jan. 12. A proposal workshop will be held from 11 a.m. to noon on Friday, Jan. 8, in the Honors College in the basement of Founders Hall.

Proposals should include:

  • Faculty name and title
  • Title of class
  • Term
  • Description of seminar (up to 500 words)
  • Description of how students will develop their intercultural knowledge and competence, highlighting how students will achieve level 2 on at least one competency in AACU’s Intercultural Knowledge and Competency VALUE Rubric
  • Brief statement (approx. 250 words) approach to diversity, equity, inclusion and privilege, and a description of any relevant training completed in the last two years.

11. Learn about Curriculog, BGSU's new curriculum proposal management system

Join the Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE) for the “Curriculog for New Proposers and Approvers” workshop that will cover Curriculog’s functionality and demonstrate how to input and read a curriculum proposal in Curriculog. This training is designed for faculty and staff who will be submitting and/or approving curriculum proposals.

13. Join the CFE's first podcast listening club & discuss how students learn reading

Want to join a book club, but don’t have time to read the book? Join the Center for Faculty Excellence’s first ever podcast club! The “Delving into the ‘Science of Reading’ Podcast Club” will explore how reading is taught in the U.S. and Ohio by discussing the provocative podcast series, “Sold A Story: How Teaching Kids to Read Went So Wrong.” Facilitated by Dr. Colleen Boff, head librarian of the Curriculum Resource Center, Dr. Kitty Burroughs, associate director of the University Writing Program, and Dr. Kate Brodeur, associate professor and graduate reading program coordinator for the School of Inclusive Teacher Education, this community will meet in-person once a month to discuss the podcast and better understand the debates about the science of reading. All BGSU faculty, adjunct instructors, graduate students and staff are welcomed and encouraged to participate. This community of practice may be of interest to anyone who works or plans to work in the K-12 setting or in higher education.

14. Learn how to create culturally responsible assessments!

The Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE) is excited to announce a new Learning Community for spring 2024, “Creating Culturally Responsible Assessments in the University Classroom Learning Community”. Facilitated by CFE faculty associate and assistant professor, Dr. Audrey Conway Roberts, this Learning Community will meet six times during the spring semester via Zoom to explore how students from multicultural backgrounds experience assessment in the classroom and how to adapt assignments to be more culturally responsible.

This Community is designed for new faculty and instructors; however, all faculty and instructors are welcomed and encouraged to participate in this Learning Community. Participants in this program who meet eligibility and participation requirements may receive $100 professional development funds upon their successful completion of the program.
