Our Commitment

Among the qualities that define an institution’s character, few speak as clearly as the arts.

In studios, galleries and classrooms, the arts are where curiosity becomes craft, where people learn to see the world differently and where an institution reveals what it values. Whether through our academic programs, student and faculty exhibitions or through the practice that art should be shared with the public, Bowling Green has embraced the arts.

Yet, for all of our 116-year history, Bowling Green has never had an art museum.

The University has maintained three fine art galleries, but it has never given the arts a permanent home of the first rank – a true museum that collects, preserves and presents work with the seriousness and elevation the arts deserve.

This proposal presents a new opportunity.

It would establish the first art museum in Bowling Green’s history while also transforming the Fine Arts Center, creating a true arts district on campus.

We know that a museum teaches what a classroom cannot.

Students who come of age with a museum on their campus learn far more than art history. They learn how to move through the spaces where cultural and civic life takes place – how to look closely, how to carry themselves with poise at an opening or in a gallery and how to conduct themselves in the rooms where consequential people gather. This is education in its oldest and fullest sense: the cultivation of judgment, taste and character.

A graduate who has learned to stand comfortably before a great work of art, and among the people who value it, carries an advantage that lasts a lifetime.

The Vision

The concept before you reimagines the Fine Arts Center as the Bowling Green State University Museum and Fine Arts Center.

A light-filled landmark anchored by grand gallery space, with room to build and present a permanent collection of our student and faculty works, modern classrooms, creative studios and a welcoming plaza that opens the building to the campus and the community.

This is not a renovation of corridors. It is the founding of an institution.

At its heart, the BGSU Museum would give a permanent home to collected works, some from personal collections as well as other donated and acquired pieces, displayed with prominence and care and seen by every student and patron who passes through its doors.

The concept places generous, connected galleries at the ground level, opening from a central lobby to the plaza – room enough for a permanent collection, rotating exhibitions and the teaching that brings students into direct contact with original work.

A second level adds an upper gallery and an outdoor terrace overlooking the campus green, along with faculty offices and classrooms that keep the working life of the arts at the heart of the building.

Why This Matters

The measure of a sophisticated society has always been its art.

Civilizations are remembered less for their commerce than for what they created and preserved – the works that record who a people were and what they valued. A university is no different. An art museum signals that Bowling Green takes its place among institutions of genuine cultural standing and treats the arts as a permanent commitment rather than a passing one.

That is what a permanent home for the arts makes possible. For the student encountering a masterwork for the first time, and for the community that gathers around it, a museum declares that at Bowling Green the arts are permanent, visible and valued.

The Opportunity

Philanthropy will allow the University to create something that has never existed at Bowling Green and can never be created twice: its first art museum.

The BGSU Museum sits within the Fine Arts Center, offering immediate, visible impact – a landmark that will educate students in the arts and teach them to move with confidence through the cultural life of their time.

Philanthropy offers a rare chance to found an institution, not merely to support one. The students who walk through these doors will be shaped by a place that would not exist without donor support.
