Life Events

A change in your situation, like getting married, having a baby, or losing health coverage, may make you eligible for a special enrollment period to make changes to your benefit plan selections outside of the normal Open Enrollment period.  When you have a life event and would like to make changes to your benefits, you must initiate a Life Event online through the myBGSU portal.  Life Events can be done from any computer with an internet connection and do not have to be completed on campus.

Once you have logged in to myBGSU, scroll down and on the left hand side select Family Status Changes/Life Events.  You will then select the type of Life Event that fits your situation, enter the exact date the Life Event took place, and upload your documentation as proof of your change in situation.  A notification is sent to HR to review your documentation for consideration, followed by a response being sent back to you via email showing that your event has been approved, denied, or needs additional documentation.  Once it has been approved, you will continue through the myBGSU Life Event process and make your requested changes.  Make sure you complete the entire process and click ‘Submit’, then print a confirmation statement for your records.  A Life Event is not considered as complete until all parts of the process are finished and submitted online.

Note:  If you have a Life Event, the documentation needs to be uploaded and approved by HR prior to updating your plan elections online.  Please take this into consideration when your deadline is approaching as HR is closed on weekends, holidays and in the evenings.

The completion of your online Life Event is required within 30 calendar days (including evenings, weekends and holidays) from the date of the event.  Any changes made will be effective as of the date of the event.

Below are documents to assist you with completion of the process for each qualifying Life Event type.
