  • BGSU Student Entrepreneurs Developing Business Presentations for "The Hatch" Apr 29, 2014 1:34 PM Twelve innovative and driven student finalists are working with highly successful business mentors on developing their presentations to present to Falcon Investors during “The Hatch” set for Wednesday, April 9, at 7:00pm in the Grand Ballroom, Bowen-Thompson Student Union. This event is similar to the popular “Shark Tank” television program and students present to the investors in front of a live audience of more than 600 people. BGSU is the only university in the U.S. that funds student businesses rather than gives prize money.

  • Meet "The Hatch" Investors Vying to Launch Student Businesses Apr 29, 2014 1:34 PM BGSU is the only university in the country to host a program where student entrepreneurs have the opportunity to obtain investor funding to launch their ventures. This unique and highly successful program called “The Hatch” is in its second year and is set for April 9 at 7:00pm in the Bowen-Thompson Student Union’s Lenhart Grand Ballroom. Students selected for the "The Hatch" have spent the last nine weeks working closely with alumni mentors to polish and perfect their presentations.

  • New Group of Students Join Student Ambassador Program Apr 28, 2014 4:05 PM After eight weeks of training on presentation and networking skills, thirteen students are joining the remaining group of 16 Student Ambassadors to begin their leadership role in the fall. These high achieving students recently had the opportunity to “practice” their newly acquired networking skills with BGSU alumni on March 17, and they will participate in a new orientation program March 24, conducted by the current group of Student Ambassadors.

  • Student’s Internship Turns into Full-Time Position at Kohl’s Apr 28, 2014 9:58 AM Students in the College of Business are strongly encouraged to obtain an internship prior to graduation so they can earn valuable experience that employers are looking for in graduates. Nearly three-fourths of the BGSU business students go through an internship, and in some cases, these internships turn into full-time jobs after graduation. Patrick McFall is a senior management student, graduating in August, who is one of those students whose internship employer, Kohl’s, offered him a full-time job at graduation. His job was full of managerial responsibilities, a lot more than he had expected.

  • Speed Interviews Prepare Students for Job Interviews Apr 24, 2014 4:39 PM As part of the Introduction to Marketing class (MKT 2010), students prepare a Career Marketing Plan project that ends each semester with a session of Speed Interviews. This “speed” approach allows students to give a brief “elevator pitch” to business professionals from area companies. These professionals listen to the students’ two-minute pitch and then give feedback on how well the students presented. After five minutes a bell rings, and the students move to another professional, improving their “sales pitch” each time.

  • Four Outstanding Innovators Shared Their Journeys to Success at Sebo Series Apr 24, 2014 11:08 AM This year’s theme for the Sebo Series in Entrepreneurship was “Entrepreneurial Journeys: Stories of Success” which featured “Shark Tank” investor Daymond John as the keynote speaker and three highly successful BGSU alumni as featured speakers. More than 1,400 people gathered in the Bowen-Thompson Student Union to hear their stories of how they got started.

  • Business College Loses Esteemed Former Dean Apr 17, 2014 4:03 PM Dr. William F. Schmeltz, passed away on Friday, April 11, 2014. He dedicated his life to education and devoted 30 years of service to Bowling Green State University as a professor, department chair and Dean of the College of Business Administration.

  • Student Marketing Organization Places Among Top 16 Chapters in the World Apr 17, 2014 11:07 AM BGSU marketing students had a lot to celebrate following the American Marketing Association International Collegiate Conference held in New Orleans April 10-12. Through the hard work of the BGSU students this past year, they earned Bronze chapter status that places the University’s chapter among the top 16 out of 351 chapters in the world.

  • Aspiring Student Entrepreneurs "Hatch" Their Businesses With Investor Support Apr 17, 2014 10:08 AM At BGSU, students have the unique opportunity to launch a business with the assistance of a business incubation program called "The Hatch." If selected as a finalist through an application process, students work on a business presentation with an alumni mentor for ten weeks. The aspiring entrepreneurs then face a panel of investors, along with a live audience, and pitch their ideas in hopes of obtaining funding to “hatch” their venture, similar to the television show "Shark Tank."

  • Highly Successful Entrepreneurs Recognized For Career of Achievements Apr 16, 2014 11:22 AM What do the following business leaders have in common…. a retired President and CEO of a premier asset management firm, one of the top 50 women Registered Investment Advisors in America, the co-founder of a Midwest gas company serving Ohio and Indiana for over 50 years, and a member of Fortune’s “10 Most Powerful Women Entrepreneurs” in 2013. These four individuals have “blazed an entrepreneurial trail to success” and will be inducted into the Dallas-Hamilton Entrepreneurial Hall of Fame on April 10. In addition, they all have a degree from BGSU.

  • New Recruiting Center Assists Employers with Interviewing Students Apr 16, 2014 9:16 AM Because of feedback from employers, the College of Business and the Business Career Accelerator have created a convenient and comfortable location for employers to interview our students for jobs year-round. Located on the fourth floor of the Business Administration Building, the new Career Accelerator Recruiting Center accommodates recruiters in four separate interview suites, and has an employer lounge and a reception area. The layout of the interview suites can be either a formal office setting or a more casual seating arrangement.

  • Entrepreneurs Learn about Legal Considerations During Day Three of E-Week Apr 10, 2014 3:57 PM A panel of attorneys discussed what entrepreneurs should consider legally when starting a business during the third Lunch and Learn. A partner from Eastman & Smith Ltd., Jim Rogers, reviewed the basic elements of the 1st Stop Business Connection guidelines created by the Ohio Small Business Development Centers. These guidelines include setting up a business with a name and legal registration, protecting your personal assets, and filing for permits and licenses needed for selling products, especially when selling/serving food.

  • Business Student Skates His Way to Pro Hockey Team Contract Apr 2, 2014 10:47 AM Ryan Carpenter, a junior business student specializing in finance, has signed a contract with the San Jose Sharks and will be joining the team’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Worcester Sharks. Carpenter, a native of Oviedo, Florida, compiled 16 goals in 15 games this season and played an important role down the stretch to help BGSU advance to the WCHA Final Five where he scored two goals and three assists in the playoffs.
