Military Students and Benefits

The Office of Registration and Records helps veterans and their dependents apply for and who receive educational benefits under the Montgomery GI Bill®.

Certifying officials in our office ensure the proper paperwork is completed, certified and filed with the VA so that educational benefit payments can be made to the student and BGSU if applicable. They also work closely with you to help maximize the value of your benefits.

Certification process – what you need to do

Apply for your benefits.

The BGSU Office of Nontraditional and Military Student Services can help you navigate the application process.

Submit intent form.

Once you receive your certificate of eligibility, you must submit the electronic intent form. You must submit a form every semester in which you take classes. We will email you reminders each semester.

Once our office receives your form, we certify your hours to the VA. We’ll update the VA as  you progress through the semester and report any enrollment changes (if you add or drop classes, etc.). We will notify you if there are any issues.

The VA then sends:

  • Benefit payments to the BGSU bursar for Chapter 31 and 33 benefits
  • Funds for housing and books directly to you

Important tips

  • The aviation flight technology program and courses do not qualify for GI Bill® or VA education benefits. You may be eligible for other military education benefits. Contact Nontraditional and Military Student Services at 419-372-8136 or ntmss@bgsu.edu for further information.
  • Only courses that satisfy requirements outlined by your degree audit will be certified.
  • If you add or drop classes after the 15th day of the start of the semester, email us as soon as possible and indicate your schedule change. It is imperative you do this as quickly as possible to prevent the issuing of improper payments.

Are you a transfer veteran student?

If you are transferring to BGSU and used your VA benefits at another college or university, you will need to fill out the online Form 22-1995 from the VA.

This will allow you to get a new certificate of eligibility for BGSU. We must have that certificate to certify your hours for the VA.
