For ancient societies, a solar eclipse was always an event of major significance, mostly happening without any warning. So what caused the disappearance, and would the sun come back? We will explore various cultures’ reactions to eclipses, and investigate the methods developed to predict when an eclipse would take place.

8. Planetarium show: Phantom of the Universe - The Hunt for Dark Matter

Description: Mysterious dark matter seems to vastly outweigh the visible matter we can see in the universe. What is dark matter and how do we learn about this puzzling component of the universe? “Phantom of the Universe - The Hunt for Dark Matter” explores these questions and showcases the search for the nature of dark matter using the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. This full-dome video show is most suitable for ages 13 and up.

11. Volunteers needed: Presidents Day Open House

Description: On Monday, Feb. 19, the Office of Admissions is hosting our annual Presidents Day Open House for high school seniors. This is the largest prospective student visit day of the year, with thousands of visitors exploring campus through tours, open houses, classroom visits and presentations all over campus.
This event is a huge endeavor, and volunteers are a big part of why this day is so successful. We are looking for volunteers to assist in various locations around campus.
As a volunteer, your role will be to provide directions, answer questions and offer a warm welcome to our visitors. Volunteers are positioned at key locations around campus, so guests can feel comfortable asking for directions.
Any faculty, staff, current student or alumni are welcome to volunteer. It's important that volunteers are familiar with campus and can provide directions to various buildings. This is a great opportunity for representatives of student organizations to connect with families while welcoming them to campus or providing directions.

Bring your questions and discuss concerns on topics such as disease prevention, sexuality and reproductive health, contraception options, relationships and risk factors for HIV and sexually transmitted infections. FREE safer sex kits and free condoms are available during the sessions to all BGSU students.

6. Summer BGP German culture course - 100% online!
Description: Take the BGP-approved "Contemporary Germany" German 2160 online this summer! The class is taught in English. Study everyday life in Germany, including its support for environmental sustainability, its role in the European Union, its response to the 2015 refugee crisis, and the role of social media, soccer, digital games and popular music in Germany today. Learn about how Germany dealt with its Nazi past, about its role during the cold war, about the revolution in East Germany, and the tearing down of the wall.

7. Research studies for undergraduate HHS students
Description: We invite students of color enrolled in our Health and Human Services (HHS) programs at BGSU to participate in two studies that aim to understand the challenges and opportunities in HHS majors.
Journaling Study: We are seeking HHS students of color who are currently taking entry level biology or chemistry courses to complete a series of reflective journal entries on their experiences over the semester. As an incentive for participating, you will receive a $50 Amazon gift card for completing the journaling entries and a $25 Amazon gift card for participating in the follow up focus group.
Focus Group: We are conducting focus groups with HHS students of color who have already completed entry level coursework in biology or chemistry. You will receive a $25 Amazon gift card as an incentive for participating.

1. Apply for the Active Learning Certificate Program!
Date and Time: Application deadline is 5 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 12
Description: The CFE’s Active Learning Certificate Program has extended its application deadline for the spring 2024 program. During this 2-month long hybrid program, you will reflect on your current teaching practices, develop a plan for incorporating active learning into your teaching, and practice implementing active learning strategies into your classroom instruction. After successfully completing the program, you will receive a digital certificate and badge noting your accomplishment. Receipt of the Active Learning Certificate allows you to be pre-assigned to an active learning classroom. Applications are due Monday, Feb. 12. Space is limited. This program is open to all BGSU faculty members, adjunct instructors, graduate students, and administrative and classified staff members.
