Seventy-five years ago on 26th January 1950, India became a democracy despite profound ethnic, religious, linguistic and cultural diversity. In the past few years, on one hand India is seen as the fastest growing economy in the world, but on the other hand there is growing concern about democratic backsliding and raising income inequality. This talk will sparse out the trajectory of India’s evolution as a democratic country and lay the foundation for some of the challenges faced by the country.

The book club will run for nine weeks (not including spring break), starting at the beginning of February (ideally the week of Feb. 7) and running through mid-April.

This semester’s book is Caucasia by Danzy Senna. This coming-of-age novel is the story of two multiracial sisters, Birdie and Cole, growing up in Boston during the Black Power Movement in the 1970s. When their parents must leave Boston for fear of arrest by the FBI, Birdie and Cole are separated. While Birdie goes on the run with their radical mother and has to pass as white, Cole follows their father to Brazil. Throughout their separation, Birdie searches for her racial identity as she is forced to deny her Blackness, her cultural heritage and all connections to her sister. The novel further explores racial identity, culture, gender, the loss of childhood and nostalgia as Birdie tries to understand who she is, where she comes from and how she fits into the world.
