The Aviation Accreditation Board International (AABI) was created in 1988 at the initiative of 100 colleges and universities with aviation programs who recognized the need to establish standards and submit themselves to the review of their peers and the industry.  Its purpose is to serve as the official accrediting body for all collegiate aviation.

The Aviation Studies Program at BGSU has received a five year accreditation with the Aviation Accreditation Board International (AABI). AABI is considered the “gold standard” for the accreditation of collegiate aviation programs. Both the Flight Technology and Operations (FTO) and Aviation Management and Operations (AMO) have received AABI accreditation.

Accreditation is a system for recognizing educational institutions and/or their professional programs that achieve and maintain a level of performance, integrity and quality that entitles them to the confidence of the educational community, the industry and the public they serve.

To achieve accreditation, aviation programs must satisfy the expectations of a wide range of quality criteria relating to strategic management of resources, interactions of faculty and students in the educational process and achievement of degree learning goals.  An AABI team of academic and industry members visits the institution seeking accreditation to evaluate the programs against accreditation standards and criteria.

Our flight education program is approved under the FAR Part 141 requirements.

What is an approved FAR part 141 Flight School?

Part 141 of the Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) are related to the structure and approval of flight schools. Training under Part 141 regulations is permitted only by instructors associated with an FAA-approved flight school. In order to become approved, a flight school must meet certain requirements and submit each curriculum it wishes to have approved to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for review. Part 141 approved schools are subject to regular surveillance audits by the FAA and must meet minimum pass rates on the practical exams. These requirements ultimately result in a safer and higher quality flight education for the students.
