Description: MDIA 4690 AI and Everyday Life
Professor John Dowd
Fall 2024: Tuesday/Thursday: 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.
You! Yes you! Want to learn more about the ways that AI shapes and impacts our lives and societies!? If so, register for MDIA 4690: AI and Everyday Life where we’ll unpack the promises and perils of our increasingly algorithmically driven world.
In it we’ll explore the ways that AI (as both a marketing term and bundle of loosely, algorithmically connected ecosystems) are increasingly woven into the fabric of our everyday lives. From credit reporting, dating, accessing public benefits, employment seeking, navigating public space, predictive policing and more, much of our lives are governed by ‘AI’ systems and digital algorithms. Even the everyday acts of web browsing and engagement with common digital devices puts us into intimate contact with AI, which can shape our views of reality and impact our mental health. While the public’s awareness of this is increasing, the degree of governance and the ubiquity of these practices still lack sufficient oversight and transparency. Thus, it is not simply that we don’t know but rather, that when behaviors by technology and data firms become so intertwined with everyday life, they desensitize us to the processes and perils of risk assessment, prediction and surveillance. Moreover, we need an accessible set of concepts for thinking through and talking about these issues. This course will empower students to engage with these and related issues across a variety of socio-political contexts.
