A Dragon is Eating The Sun! But We Knew That Would Happen... or Not: Presented by Dr. Allen Rogel, Dept. of Physics & Astronomy
For ancient societies, a solar eclipse was always an event of major significance, mostly happening without any warning. So what caused the disappearance, and would the Sun come back? We will explore various cultures’ reactions to eclipses, and investigate the methods developed to predict when an eclipse would take place.

3. Is your loved one struggling with their mental health?

Description: NAMI Family & Friends is a free 90-minute seminar that informs people who have loved ones with a mental health condition how to best support them. It’s also an opportunity to meet other people in similar situations and gain community support. The seminar is led by trained people with lived experience of supporting a family member with a mental health condition.

8. Planetarium Show: Phantom of the Universe - The Hunt for Dark Matter

Description: Mysterious dark matter seems to vastly outweigh the visible matter we can see in the Universe. What is dark matter and how do we learn about this puzzling component of the Universe? “Phantom of the Universe - The Hunt for Dark Matter” explores these questions and showcases the search for the nature of dark matter using the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. This full-dome video show is most suitable for ages 13 and up.
Public stargazing will follow the Sunday 7:30 p.m. programs on clear evenings.

9. The 50th anniversary of Good Times
Date and Time: 7 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 22

Description: February 8, 2024, marks the 50th anniversary of the American situation comedy Good Times, which aired on the CBS network until Aug. 1, 1979. The series was remarkable for its time because it featured the first intact Black nuclear family, the Evanses, on primetime television. The presentation will overview the groundbreaking representations of family, class, race, and gender in Good Times as well as discuss its legacy today. Dr. Angela Nelson in the School of Cultural and Critical Studies will present this talk.

11. Volunteers needed: Presidents Day Open House
Date and Time: Monday, Feb. 19
Location: BGSU - Main Campus
Description: On Monday, Feb. 19, the BGSU Office of Admissions is hosting our annual Presidents Day Open House for high school seniors. This is the largest prospective student visit day of the year, with thousands of visitors exploring campus through tours, open houses, classroom visits and presentations all over campus.
This event is a huge endeavor, and volunteers are a big part of why this day is so successful. We are looking for volunteers to assist in various locations around campus. As a volunteer, your role will be to provide directions, answer questions and offer a warm welcome to our visitors. Volunteers are positioned at key locations around campus, so guests can feel comfortable asking for directions.
Any faculty, staff, current student or alumni are welcome to volunteer. It's important that volunteers are familiar with campus and can provide directions to various buildings. This is a great opportunity for representatives of student organizations to connect with families while welcoming them to campus or providing directions.

12. WomCom! (Women in Comedy show)

Description: Women in Comedy show is a fundraiser to raise money for the cocoon! The show is only $5 for a night filled with laughs. Come have a great time with the Lady Parts improv team, Acous-Chicks a capella group, and other women in comedy performances! There's going to be a bake sale and pie a lady part member in the face. There is a raffle for lots of prize baskets for 50 cents per raffle ticket only. Some baskets are worth more than $50! This is a non-profit show so please come show your support!

15. MyBGSU portal outage scheduled for Feb. 23

Description: The MyBGSU portal will be unavailable from 10 p.m. to midnight on Friday, Feb. 23, while ITS performs an upgrade to the portal’s Liferay application. During this time users will be unable to login to and access all tools and portlets located within MyBGSU. Canvas will still be available but must be accessed directly at bgsu.instructure.com.

6. Voluntary dental insurance
United HealthCare Student Resources offers a voluntary dental and vision plan to all BGSU students. To enroll, visit the United Healthcare Student Resources website and enter Bowling Green State University as your school. At the bottom of the following page, you will notice a link for ‘Voluntary Dental/Vision’. Enter your specific information and available plan options with pricing and benefits will appear.

1. BGSU Retirement Fair coming Feb. 28
Stay informed and optimize your retirement planning. The Office of Human Resources will be holding its first annual BGSU Retirement Fair on Wednesday, Feb. 28, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in BTSU 308. This open house event will host representatives from OPERS, STRS and Ohio Deferred Compensation, along with approved vendors for the BGSU Alternative Retirement Plan and BGSU supplemental retirement plans. A CAPTRUST representative also will be available to discuss the Financial Wellness and Advice program purchased by the University for our employees. This program offers eligible employees independent advice along with assistance navigating retirement benefits and financial priorities.

2. Classified Staff Council scholarship
Date and Time: From Wednesday, Feb. 8, to Sunday, March 31
Description: BGSU's Classified Staff Council is accepting scholarship applications for the 2024/2025 academic year.
This scholarship is given annually to selected current classified staff employees and/or their spouse or dependent(s) that are currently enrolled at BGSU and have a minimum 2.5 grade point average. Applicants must be an undergraduate or graduate in a degree-seeking program (either full-time or part-time) that has at least one semester of course work remaining at BGSU prior to graduation. Applicants must have completed 12 credit hours at BGSU.
Discover different scholarship opportunities! The deadline to apply for CSC's scholarship is Sunday, March 31. All applicants will be notified of the final decision.

4. Learn next steps with Curriculog in a hands-on workshop!

Description: Curriculog is BGSU’s new curriculum proposal management system. Join the Center for Faculty Excellence and the Curriculog implementation team for their interactive, in-person session, “Curriculog Next Steps: A Hands-on Workshop,” to practice using the platform. Bring your laptop and any materials you need to submit a proposal for a new course or program or to submit a course or program change. This training is designed for faculty and staff who will be submitting and/or approving curriculum proposals. You should have previously attended the “Curriculog for New Proposers and Approvers Workshop” and/or have some familiarity with Curriculog prior to attending this workshop.

5. New CFE Learning Lounges!
Date and Time: 10:30 to 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 22

Description: The CFE is excited to launch the new Learning Lounge Series this spring. Consisting of short but impactful virtual sessions, the Learning Lounge Series is designed to equip you with practical strategies and tools you can use in your course design and classroom instruction. Each 30-minute session starts with a 5-10 minute presentation and is followed by time for asking questions and sharing experiences.
February’s virtual Learning Lounge, “Deciding When to Incorporate AI into Your Class,” will explore a decision tree for determining how and when to use AI in your courses. After the session, the AI Decision Tree and presentation recording will be shared with you.
