2. Class Consciousness and Pop Culture CFP
CALL FOR PAPERS/VOICES/PARTICIPATION - Deadline Feb. 1
The need for class consciousness in universities is greater than ever. Few students are provided the tools to understand what is happening to America's most vulnerable and therefore have no understanding of how to address and combat it. Lower-income students often find themselves lost and unsupported within an academic system that neglects class. This conference aims to facilitate dialog concerning the issue of class in
American culture, both in traditional academic presentations and in workshops, discussions and artistic representations (written, spoken, visual, performance, etc.).
The main areas of the conference include (but are not limited to):
- Class Representations in Popular Culture
- Class Issues in Academia
- Social Outreach and Activism
Please submit your proposals by Feb. 1 to classcon@bgsu.edu.

3. CWGE virtual research seminar with Jinx Milo!
The Center for Women and Gender Equity invites the BGSU community to our first research seminar of the spring 2023 semester, featuring Jinx Mylo! In “Everything’s Gonna Be Kinda Queer: Autistic Gender & Sexuality in Everything’s Gonna Be Okay,” Mylo, a Ph.D. student in the School of Media and Communication, analyzes the representations of autistic characters in the television show Everything’s Gonna Be Okay in relation to gender and sexuality. In contrast to previous screen representations, the four autistic characters provide a variety of gender expressions and sexual orientations, challenging the stereotypes that perpetuate the idea of autism being limited to heterosexual men. Issues explored include attitudes toward autistic sexual consent and agency, sexual experimentation and the impacts of communication norms on romantic relationships.
This research seminar will take place Wednesday, Jan. 25, from noon to 1 p.m. over Zoom. Please contact cwge@bgsu.edu to RSVP and receive the Zoom link for this event.
