7. Peru service-learning trip

Description: MEDLIFE will be hosting an annual service-learning trip (SLT) this spring! This is a great opportunity to travel and gain service hours. During the trip, you will be helping low-income families access the healthcare that they need, support their community and also have a chance to participate in exciting excursions! This trip is open to ALL majors. You do not need to have any medical experience to attend.

Description: Please do not approve Duo authentication requests if you are NOT actively attempting to log in to a Duo-protected service (Canvas, MyBGSU, etc.).

Hackers can use your stolen usernames/passwords to initiate Duo prompts. Approving these prompts gives hackers access to your accounts!

12. WBGU-PBS hosts “Eclipse Activities for Kids” at BGSU Planetarium

Description: WBGU-PBS is partnering with the BGSU Physics and Astronomy Department to host “Eclipse Activities for Kids” from 5:30-6:15 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 29, at the BGSU Planetarium. The goal is to excite and educate elementary and middle school children and their families about the upcoming eclipse by providing engaging hands-on learning activities and resources. WBGU-PBS mascot Ruby-the-Red Eyed Tree Frog will make a special appearance. BGSU Physics and Astronomy Professors Dr. Andrew Layden and Dr. Kate Dellenbusch will answer questions about eclipses and viewing safety. Attendees will receive eclipse viewing glasses, a space-related children’s book, a copy of “Sun, Moon and Shadows,” WBGU-PBS’s eclipse guide and activity companion and more! Pizza will be served. Participants are welcome to stay after the program for a 6:30 p.m. planetarium show called "It's About Time,” explaining the Thursday, Feb. 29, Leap Day. The show is free, but a $1 donation is encouraged.

Description: Falcon 2 Falcon is a peer-based and lead group for BGSU students through the Garrett Lee Smith Suicide Prevention Grant.

A Falcon 2 Falcon Peer Group Facilitator is a BGSU student who volunteers their time to lead peer support groups and get the necessary training to help facilitate peer group sessions while connecting other falcons to resources that can be beneficial to their wellbeing.

11. Spring break service trip to the Appalachian Trail

Date and Time: From 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 2, to 5 p.m. on Friday, March 8.

Location: Damascus, Virginia, on the Appalachian Trail We will be renting vans and driving down.

Description: Join bGAB on a student-led service trip to the Appalachian Trail! On this service trip participants will be serving with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy in Damascus, Virginia, and will be staying with the Appalachian Trail Institute. Service work will include trail maintenance, helping the ATC prep for the spring and summer season and working alongside local AT hiking clubs. The trip will leave on Saturday, March 2, and will return on Friday, March 8.

Trip Cost: $275 (includes transportation, lodging and food. Once registered, you will receive a link to BGSU Cashnet to make the payment for the trip). An in-person trip orientation meeting will be held between the site leaders and participants before the trip departs to review the trip itinerary, packing list and overall logistics of the trip.

6. February Research and Innovation Forum

Description: Join us for the February Research and Innovation Forum

Dr. Pavel Anzenbacher Jr., professor of chemistry, will share information about a photochemical method for testing the efficacy of drugs against solid tumors. Solid tumors require an acidic environment to proliferate and this acidity is maintained by a specific enzyme called carbonic anhydrase IX. Potential drugs to inhibit this enzyme in tumors could lead to cures for many cancers.

Following the presentation, stay for a Q&A and networking opportunities. Light refreshments will be served.
