1. Finalists for VP for Research on campus this week

Finalists for the Vice President for Research position are on the Bowling Green campus this week. Each candidate is giving a presentation followed by a Q and A session in the Bowen-Thompson Student Union Theatre, which will also be livestreamed to the BGSU community.

Ece Karatan, Ph.D., will present from 10 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 30. Their credentials are available on the Provost’s website and information for the remaining candidate will be available before they visit campus.

2. Becoming a Mental Health Champion - New certificate program

As part of the BGSU Community of Care initiatives, the Office of Health and Wellness is launching the Mental Health Champion Certificate. This program recognizes members of the BGSU community for their participation in mental health training and their commitment to promoting mental well-being at BGSU. This is an opportunity for faculty, staff and students to gain skills is responding to mental health problems and crises, navigating campus and community resources, and promoting the Community of Care pillars.

3. Celebrate our special needs community by being a Buddy at the 2024 Night to Shine!

The Night to Shine annual event is done with the Tim Tebow Foundation. During this prom-like event, we celebrate our special needs community. They are treated like kings and queens for the night with a dinner and fun activities. It’s an opportunity for our guests to feel loved for who they are. Buddy volunteers are their friend for the evening. We would love for you to participate in this one-of-a-kind experience. If you’re not interested in being a Buddy, there are many other ways to volunteer. If you have questions, please contact kmorga@bgsu.edu.

4. Celebrating Carl Sagan

“The cosmos is within us. We are made of star-stuff. We are a way for the universe to know itself.” is one of the most famous lines of the famous astronomer, Carl Sagan. He is someone who has inspired many and still continues to inspire over two decades after his passing. The BGSU Secular Student Alliance is celebrating him this week in their final meeting of the semester. Come join them from 6 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 30, in Central Hall 110.

5. ITS service desk winter break hours

The Information Technology Services (ITS) service desk will close at 5 p.m. on weekdays from Dec. 11 to Jan. 5 and will also be closed on weekends and University holidays during this time. Regular hours will resume on Saturday, Jan. 6.

6. Presentation registration for Symposium on Diversity closing soon

Proposals for poster presentations by undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty and staff (classified and administrative), are now accepted for:

9th ANNUAL SYMPOSIUM ON DIVERSITY

Hosted by the Center for Undergraduate Research and Scholarship as part of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service and Learning, presented by the Beyond the Dream Committee.

  • Date: Jan. 17, 2024
  • Time: 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
  • Location: Lenhart Grand Ballroom in the Bowen-Thompson Student Union

Undergraduate and graduate students from all disciplines, as well as faculty and administrative staff, may submit proposals to give a poster presentation on any topic related to diversity, including but not limited to culture, ethnicity, race, gender, sexuality, age, disability and socio-economic status. Both group and individual presentations will be accepted. For student presenters, submissions as part of classroom work as well as individually faculty-mentored student projects are welcome. Please share this announcement widely with students and colleagues.

Deadline for presentation proposals: Wednesday, Nov. 29, at 5 p.m. Extensions can be given if requested in advance.

Submit your proposal to give a poster presentation. Only a presentation title and brief abstract are required for presentation registration and please submit only one registration per presentation.

8. Toys for Tickets - Citations dismissed in exchange for a new unwrapped toy.

BGSU Parking Services will dismiss any citations issued Oct. 1 to Dec. 1 in exchange for a new unwrapped toy. The toys must be delivered to the BGSU Parking Services office before the end of finals week and must be of equal or greater value to the ticket. The toy receipt must be delivered with the toy. Forged or illegal permit and those for parking in a handicap area do not qualify. The toys will be donated to the Wood County Children's Protective Service and Wood County Children's Resource Center. You may also donate a toy without a citation.

9. Women of Distinction nominations are open now!

Nominations for the 10th Annual Women of Distinction Awards are open now until Jan. 11!

The Women of Distinction award honors outstanding leaders in the BGSU community who serve as role models and/or mentors to individuals who have faced discrimination based on sex and/or gender and exhibit dedication to empowering individuals who have faced discrimination based on sex and/or gender to achieve their goals. Award recipients may be undergraduate or graduate students, staff members, community/alumni or faculty members of all genders.

10. SMC Colloquium presentation about Social Media & Body Dysmorphic Disorder Dec. 1

All are invited to attend Dr. John Dowd's presentation titled "'Does This Filter Make Me Look Skinny?': Some Real Talk about Social Media & Body Dysmorphic Disorder" this Friday, Dec. 1, from 1 to 2 p.m. on Zoom (Meeting ID: 824 6064 0716, Passcode: 2023).

This Thursday, Nov. 30, join the CWGE for this month's "I'm Speaking": An Intersectional Feminist Conversation Series. The theme is Sex work and we will be talking about sex work, sex workers' rights, misconceptions about sex work, etc. This will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. in 203 Hayes Hall.

12. 24th Black Issues Conference: Call for presentations

The 24th Black Issues Conference (Thursday, Feb. 15) invites proposals for papers, presentations and creative works to be presented at this year's conference. This can take the form of a paper or PowerPoint presentation, discussion, performance or video.

The theme for this years' Conference is: “Freestyle: Celebrating Black Determination, Innovation and Creativity.”

13. Come to ArtsX: Movement this Saturday

Come to ArtsX: Movement 5 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 2, in the BGSU Fine Arts Center and Wolfe Center for the Arts. The 19th annual holiday event includes fun and entertaining performances, exhibits and activities for guests of all ages. This year’s event features a multi-sensory experience by Fringe Society, a Detroit-based hybrid and experimental art collective. ArtsX is free and open to the public. 5. International students: Chance to win a $10 or $20 gift card!

My name is Aniko Varga, a graduate student in the Department of Psychology. I am conducting a research study investigating the effects of cultural food security (e.g., access to foods from one’s home country) on international students’ well-being, under the supervision of Dr. Dara Musher-Eizenman.

I am looking to recruit international students from BGSU to take part in the survey. The study should take approximately 30 minutes to complete. As a compensation, each qualifying participant will be entered into a raffle and randomly selected to earn one of twenty $10 or fifteen $20 Amazon gift cards. The chance to win a gift card is approximately one in six. This study has been approved by the Bowling Green State University Institutional Review Board.

Are you ready to supercharge your study session and make the most of your study time? Look no further! The Learning Commons and Recreation and Wellness have teamed up to bring you a two-hour Study Power Hour event and we've got some surprises in store to help you stay focused and relaxed.

During the event, you will study for 25 minutes, take a five-minute break and repeat until the two hours are up. RecWell is providing the study break activities and the Learning Commons will supply dinner for all attendees.

1. Life Design Affiliate Workshop

Join The Radbill Center for College and Life Design for a full day immersive Life Design experience from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 7. In the morning participants will experience Life Design tools focused on you. In the afternoon participants will apply knowledge gained to ideate and prototype how you might integrate Life Design mindsets and tools into your work.

Any faculty or staff member is welcome to attend this workshop regardless of your current level of understanding of Life Design. Lunch will be provided. This workshop is facilitated by Executive Director Adrienne Ausdenmoore and members of the Radbill Center.

2. Request an International Travel Laptop if traveling abroad this winter

If traveling abroad for University business, please request an International Travel Laptop from ITS and do not bring your own University device. If traveling internationally for personal reasons during which you must conduct University business, we also recommend you request an International Travel Laptop. If you are able, we suggest leaving all personal devices behind while traveling internationally.

At least 10 business days are required to prepare an International Travel Laptop. Some software is export-controlled and subject to review before being installed on devices used for international travel.

From Nov. 30 to Dec. 8, we are hosting multiple sessions of the Supervisor Skills sessions so you can finish the skill-path before the end of the semester. Please view the sessions loaded into the Bridge system under the Live Trainings category.

*Please note this Wrap Up Week is for individuals who have already started the skill-path and need to complete one or a few of the remaining courses.
