Students

1. Earn $250 for taking an online course (Education and/or History majors)

Due to a grant received by BGSU’s Dr. Angela Thomas, she is offering a “one-time only” special course, Teaching in the Digital Age with Primary Source Documents. As a result of the grant, students will receive the three teacher resource books for free. Additionally, after implementing a unit developed in the course, students will receive a check for $250 to spend as they wish.

If needed, this course counts as an elective in BGSU’s Master of Education in Curriculum and Teaching program, but undergraduates may also take this course if approved. To register, this 3-credit hour online course is: EDTL 6800 Graduate Seminar in Curriculum and Instruction. Section# 603W-SEM 74484 (Aug. 26 – Oct. 15, 2021).

Questions or difficulty registering? Email Dr. Angela Falter Thomas at AngThom@bgsu.edu

Course Description: Learn to harness the power of the Library of Congress's vast resources. Primary sources open a window to first-hand experiences and provide authentic records for content being studied in today's classrooms. This course is designed to educate teachers and future teachers on how to utilize primary sources in a classroom through a variety of strategies. Due to a grant obtained from the Library of Congress, students will each earn a $250 stipend following the implementation of their final unit and for participating in survey questions telling how to make this course better for the Library of Congress to use as a model course. Three books (teacher resources) will also be provided (a $125 value).

Faculty/Staff

1. Assessing Course Design and Delivery

The design elements of an online or remote course can influence both the teaching and learning that occur within the course. In this workshop, participants will reflect on their online and remote course design and delivery, review standards for high quality course design (Quality Matters and BGSU Rubrics), and share best practices for (re)designing an effective, engaging, and well-structured online course.

Date: Monday, August 9th from 10:30 AM - Noon

Register for an Assessing Your Online Course workshop being offered through the Center for Faculty Excellence.

2. FREE QM Training - “Designing Your Online Course” workshop

The “Designing Your Online Course” workshop includes an overview of the QM Rubric and provides a framework for participants to design an online course plan. An integral element of the workshop is an exploration of the eight General Standards of the QM Rubric, focusing on learning objectives and overall course alignment. Participants will complete a Course Development Plan. The plan includes all of the essential Specific Review Standards (SRS) with a column for how the participant will meet the SRS in their course and what resources they will need.

This workshop is specifically for faculty who are new to online teaching and do not have an existing course to use. This is a hands-on session where participants will engage with one another to provide feedback on how to design a course from the student perspective, and also engage in activities that allow faculty to create a course plan for how to develop the course for online delivery. The DYOC may also be appropriate for instructional designers who are helping to design a new course.

3. Update: Fall 2021 Canvas Webex Decommission

ITS will decommission the Canvas Webex integration at the end of the Fall 2021 Semester. In response to faculty input, the Canvas Zoom integration was implemented during the Fall 2020 Semester as a replacement for Webex. Faculty who have not yet made the transition to Zoom should prepare to do so in the coming months, which includes the export of videos currently stored in Webex. Export instructions and additional information is available at www.bgsu.edu/webex.

Questions? Contact ITS at 419-372-0999 or ITSchat.bgsu.edu.

4. Creating Engaging Microlearning Videos Workshop

BGSU faculty had to quickly transition to remote learning over the past year. While transitioning many faculty have decided to implement videos within their courses. Often times instructors may find that participation is low in synchronous lectures and are looking to find more efficient ways to engage students in their subject matter.

In this workshop instructors will be able to define what microlearning videos are and the benefits of producing this type of video, discuss the steps and best practices involved in creating microlearning videos and be able to determine what platform is best to host videos while keeping in mind best practices for accessibility.

Register for a Creating Engaging Microlearning Videos workshop being offered by the Center for Faculty Excellence.

5. Onsite Surplus Viewing Administration Building Floors 1-3

In addition to surplus viewing at Reed Street Warehouse, we will also have onsite surplus viewing in the Administration Building on Monday and Tuesday, July 26th and 27th from 10:00am-2:00pm.
