3. Memorial Service for Dr. Neil Englehart (1964-2020)

With Covid restrictions lifted, a memorial service to celebrate the life of Dr. Neil Englehart will be held on Saturday, June 19 at 11 a.m. at Zoar Lutheran Church in Perrysburg. A luncheon will follow in Zoar’s Family Life Center.

Dr. Englehart served as Professor and Chair of BGSU’s Political Science Department until 2020. An international expert on human rights, state failure, non-state armed groups and Southeast Asia, he authored several books and numerous scholarly articles. Dr. Englehart traveled to 14 countries to conduct research, bringing his experiences home and into BGSU’s classrooms. The Dr. Neil Andrew Englehart Memorial Study Abroad Scholarship honors his commitment to exposing BGSU students to global issues and cultures.

4. BiG Band BG needs some new members

BiG Band BG, the Bowling Green Area Community Jazz Band (an all-volunteer group), needs some new members. It has openings in the saxophone, trombone, and rhythm (piano, guitar) sections. The band has a great time playing jazz arrangements on Monday nights through most of the year, plus about eight performances annually (mostly on Sundays). No jazz experience is necessary. Good music-reading ability is important, because most parts are written out fully. Rehearsals begin July 12. Contact Bill Lake wlake@bgsu.edu. A waiting list is kept, if you are interested and don’t happen to play any of the above-mentioned instruments. About two-thirds of the members are BGSU retirees or alumni.

This workshop focuses on elements of online pedagogy that promote community building in remote learning. Referencing the Community of Inquiry framework, this session focuses on online and remote teaching strategies and Canvas tools that support Cognitive Presence (critical thinking and reflection), Teaching Presence (facilitating discussions, creating connections, and providing feedback and support), and Social Presence (student engagement, authentic peer interaction, shared goals, and collaboration).

5. Canvas New Quizzes coming soon!

“New Quizzes” is coming in July 2021. Instructors will have the option to continue to use the current assessment feature “Classic Quizzes” through December 2022 when the vendor will discontinue its use.

“New Quizzes” is an updated assessment engine that integrates with Canvas and replaces the current quizzes functionality (Classic Quizzes) in Canvas. “New Quizzes” will be enabled for instructors to begin to familiarize themselves with the tool. There are new question types such as Categorization, Ordering, and Hot Spots. Some other improvements you may notice include a more streamlined way to manage item banks and the ability to copy quizzes.

"Classic Quizzes" will be discontinued by the vendor in December 2022 at which time all assessment will need to be in "New Quizzes". We recommend that any new course assessments use "New Quizzes" beginning in July 2021.
