1. Fire Hydrant Flushing

Main Campus Wednesday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Annual Hydrant flushing will begin across campus. Hydrants will be opened and allowed to run for several minutes as part of preventative maintenance. As a result of this process, water may be temporarily discolored. The discoloration is due to silt and air in the lines and does not affect the safety of the water. If you experience discolored water, allow faucets to run for a few minutes to flush the lines.

2. New University Policy - Chosen Name - 3341-2-48

A cross-divisional committee collaborated to create the Chosen Name policy. The purpose of the policy is to enable students, faculty, and staff to use a chosen name within specific university systems and processes. ITS and the Registrar are working together to ensure that the chosen name will be changed in university systems such as PeopleSoft. People will not have to look for the chosen name as it will appear on rosters, BG1 cards (if a person purchases a new card), various records, and yes, even on Starbucks labels. We ask that faculty, staff, and students are using chosen names whenever one is designated. As an institution aspiring to build a campus climate that fosters an inclusive environment, empowers and supports people, and builds up a community where all are welcomed, valued, and affirmed, one of the first steps is in allowing people to express who they are. Names are an important part of our identities and being referred to by anything other than our chosen names can be a disempowering moment for some.

1. Disability Graduate Student Writing Group

The Disability Writing Group will continue meet over the summer. We set goals for our writing and then write on Zoom. This is particularly good for folks with dissertations or thesis but anyone who wants to write or really just help to keep them on task is welcome. We will be meeting Thursday 9 a.m.-11 a.m. during the summer.

The Zoom link is here. If you have questions reach out to me Val Erwin at verwin@bgsu.edu and I will add you to our list.

1. Canvas "New Quizzes" coming soon!

“New Quizzes” is coming in July 2021. Instructors will have the option to continue to use the current assessment feature “Classic Quizzes” through December 2022 when the vendor will discontinue its use.

“New Quizzes” is an updated assessment engine that integrates with Canvas and replaces the current quizzes functionality (Classic Quizzes) in Canvas. “New Quizzes” will be enabled for instructors to begin to familiarize themselves with the tool. There are new question types such as Categorization, Ordering, and Hot Spots. Some other improvements you may notice include a more streamlined way to manage item banks and the ability to copy quizzes.

"Classic Quizzes" will be discontinued by the vendor in December 2022 at which time all assessment will need to be in "New Quizzes". We recommend that any new course assessments use "New Quizzes" beginning in July 2021.

More information is located with this link.

The Center for Faculty Excellence is offering workshops in July. Register here.

The Studio interface allows students and instructors to engage with media by implementing in-video commenting. Low-stakes quizzes can be added right within the video for low stakes student assessment. This workshop will demonstrate the features of Canvas Studio from producing and editing screen capture videos to utilizing student analytics.
