Description: This Science Café event will feature Dr. Jari Willing, assistant professor of neural and cognitive sciences at BGSU. Jari will give a talk titled "Puberty and the Brain."

Adolescence, broadly defined as the transition from childhood to adulthood, is associated with numerous changes in the brain and behavior. This is also a period during which many psychiatric disorders tend to manifest. Emerging evidence suggests that within the adolescence period, the onset of puberty may be the critical catalyst for changes in the brain that rapidly alter behavior, making some more susceptible to psychiatric illness.

Join us in person or via Zoom for this amazing Hybrid event! Juniper Brewing Company will be hosting us at 6 p.m. All will be welcome to eat, drink and chat about all things science! After the talk, audience members will be able to ask Jari any questions they may have.

5. Bloomfest

Description: Come join the Music Industry Club and the Environmental Action Group on Saturday, April 13th for our annual music festival Bloomfest! This free musical event will be from 5-9 p.m. on the University Hall Lawn and in the event of rain will be held in the Maurer Center Schmeltz Atrium. The event will host the bands Freight Street, villagerrr, Stay Outside and Cousin Simple to play live music and gather the community to celebrate Earth Month and sustainability! 7. Learning Magic Forms of the Universe: CHIN 1010 Beginning Chinese

The Chinese Language

Description: If you are interested in learning how our universe can be reflected in forms of language, CHIN 1010 (Fall semester 2024) is for you. CHIN 1010 is designed for beginners who do not have or have a little knowledge of the Chinese language. We will begin learning how Chinese characters, the foundation of Chinese language, are formed to reflect the universe, including our human figures, emotions, behaviors and our recognitions of natural phenomena around us. We will also learn how to conduct daily communications by learning Chinese pronunciations. Our wonderful language teacher will assist you establish a solid foundation of the Chinese language. Additionally, we will integrate Chinese calligraphy into language learning. We will provide traditional calligraphy materials such as ink and rice paper. The Chinese language and Culture Club will organize fabulous events and activities for you to experience some aspects of Chinese culture.

9. What can you learn from a monster? Or a ghost?

Description: Find out this Fall in CLCV 3880 "Monsters, Ghosts and Magic." We’ll study classical traditions of magic, ghosts and monsters through reading and discussion of primary texts in English translation: folktales, excerpts from epic and tragedy, etc. We’ll use techniques of comparative mythology to connect classical folktale to other storytelling traditions, and discuss the reception and appropriation of magic and myth in the modern world. Description: POPC 1600 103W 41517 – Introduction to Popular Culture is being offered online during the second six-week summer session June 24 through August 2. The course is designed to introduce you to a variety of critical approaches used in the study of popular culture. Although this course will draw on your familiarity with popular culture, we will approach the subject from a scholarly perspective. The overall objective is to explore how popular culture, in all its various forms, not only reflects the world around us but also how it influences the way we perceive the world. Every day we are exposed to thousands of images, sounds and experiences that we understand as natural – as just the way the world is. But this everyday life we take for granted is anything but natural. It is both the product and the creator of a shared worldview. This course fulfills the BGP Humanities and Arts requirement or College of Arts and Sciences MDC requirements.

Description: Learn about the high and low lights of almost 2000 years of the history of Western Civilization! This fall, explore how German Culture has impacted world views. From the heroics of Charlemagne to Medieval love poetry, from Martin Luther to the 18th-century teaching of religious tolerance, from Kant to Marx, Nietzsche and Freud: learn more about how German politics, arts and culture have come to shape Western society. Taught in English.

GERM 2150-1001 (#70982) meets MWF 2:30-3:20 p.m. This course fulfills the Arts and Humanities BG Perspective and International Perspectives Learning Outcomes.

19. Storytelling, death and memory...

Description: This fall, study key Mexican/Latinx figures and texts by using culture, art and literature to engage with stories told about past people and times. Topics include indigenous concepts of life and death, popular saints such as la Santa Muerte, representations of La Catrina, testimonios, and other forms of activism keeping memories alive about people lost to atrocities, ghosts, and folklore such as La Llorona. Explore traditions associated with Día de Muertos, (celebrated Nov. 1-2) and build understanding about meanings found in artifacts and artistry of ofrendas. Students will also have chance to contribute to a storytelling project connecting these topics with area community.

Study for 25 minutes, take a 5 minute break, and repeat until the two hours are up. Recreation and Wellness is providing the study break activities, and the Learning Commons will supply dinner for all attendees.

5. Setting a Course for Student Success in the First Two Weeks workshop

Description: The first two weeks of a semester are a crucial part of developing a sense of belonging and a pathway toward success for our students. The hands-on workshop, “Setting a Course for Student Success in the First Two Weeks,” will explore strategies for engaging students, setting meaningful expectations for the semester, and providing students with early, actionable feedback. Led by the CFE team and faculty facilitators, this workshop will provide you with an intentional, student-centered plan for the first two weeks of class. You must be able to participate in the entirety of the two-day workshop in order to register and participate in this event. Registration is open to full-time qualified rank faculty (QRF), tenure-track faculty (TTF), and adjunct instructors teaching a Fall 2024 course.

Description: The deadline for interactive session proposals for the 2024 Teaching and Learning Summit has been extended until 5 p.m. on Monday, April 15. This year’s Teaching abd Learning Summit will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7 in Olscamp Hall. The theme for this year’s Summit is “Forward: The Future of Teaching & Learning”. Proposed interactive sessions should have clear learning outcomes and provide participants with opportunities to collaborate, interact, and engage. All members of the BGSU teaching community, including faculty, instructors, staff and graduate students, are welcome and encouraged to submit a proposal.
