1. 44th Annual New Music Festival at the CMA Oct. 19-21

Featuring seven concerts over three days, Bowling Green State University will host the 44th annual Bowling Green New Music Festival on Oct. 19-21 in the Moore Musical Arts Center and streaming live online.

Highlights of this year's festival include a talk by guest composer Marcos Balter on Oct. 19 and a performance by ensemble Dal Niente, a Chicago-based contemporary chamber orchestra, on Oct. 20. Special performances by the duo andPlay and T.H.E. Modern Dance Company are also planned.

All events are free and open to the public except for the closing orchestral and choral concerts. Purchase your tickets today.

Organized by the MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music and the BGSU College of Musical Arts, the festival supports the creation of new work while engaging the University and surrounding communities in the pursuit of music appreciation and awareness.

Over the years, the Bowling Green New Music Festival has hosted notable composers such as John Adams, Milton Babbitt, John Cage, Chen Yi, John Corigliano, George Crumb, Philip Glass, Jennifer Higdon, Lou Harrison, David Lang, Pauline Oliveros, Terry Riley, Christopher Rouse, John Luther Adams, Steven Stucky, Joan Tower and more than 400 other guest composers and musicians.

2. City of Bowling Green election candidate forum

Undergraduate Student Government is hosting a forum for candidates running in BG City elections this year! Join us to hear from city council, mayoral and school board candidates about their position from 6 to 8 p.m. on on Wednesday, Oct. 18, in BTSU 308.

3. Come see short film "The Reluctant Radical" and get some popcorn!

There are a lot of issues, problems and injustices in our world today and it's sometimes hard to find inspiration and energy to voice your opinion and find your own way to effect change, no matter the topic. Come watch the short, award-winning documentary "The Reluctant Radical" at 6 p.m. tonight Monday, Oct. 16, in Education 319 and get some much needed inspiration!

The film features climate activist Ken Ward, an ordinary citizen, who disrupts the status quo to fulfill his own personal obligations to future generations. Not only will it inspire you, but it will also challenge the way you view climate change and taking action on any topic. Free popcorn too!

5. Folk Music Night tonight!

Join the Bowling Green Socialists and listen to a free public presentation and discussion of the history of political folk music in the U.S. by BGSU alum, Dr. Britt Rhuart. The event will begin at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 16, in Olscamp 113. All are welcome!

6. Free and confidential HIV testing Wednesday at the SRC

This testing service, offered at the Student Recreation Center, is completely free and confidential. Call the Wellness Connection at 419-372-9355 to schedule an appointment for a Rapid HIV test. Walk-ins are always welcome. LGBTQ+ friendly and affirming. A real name is not needed when making the appointment.

  • Time: 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
  • Location: Student Recreation Center
  • Upcoming Dates: Oct. 18, Nov. 1 & 15 and Dec. 6
  • Bring a photo ID to the appointment.

Free internal and external condoms are available - testing is not required.

7. Free Health Fair and Teaching Kitchen demo

The Expo and Health Fair is tomorrow! A variety of health and wellness activities and screenings are planned, as well as demonstrations brought to you by the Teaching Kitchen. This demo is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 17, in the Bowen-Thompson Student Union (Lenhart Grand Ballroom).

Some of the activities include:

  • Chef tips on preparing fresh foods
  • Teaching Kitchen demonstrations
  • Walk-in updated COVID-19 booster and flu shots in nearby Sky Bank room 201 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Fitness demonstrations
  • Interactive health and wellness displays
  • Ride the smoothie bike to make your own healthy snack

8. Free tie dye and tailwags tomorrow

The Friends of the Paws Team will be hosting our second general event of the semester, from 6 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 17, in BTSU 208. T-shirts and bandanas will be available to iron-on and tie dye. The dogs will also swing by for some mid-crafting pets. Come learn what the Paws Team is all about!

9. Hear about Study Abroad experiences by students Oct. 18

Are you interested in BGSU's Study Abroad program or are fascinated by global/international/intercultural topics? Come and listen to undergraduate and graduate students presenting on a variety of topics covering many different countries such as Malawi, Japan, Austria, Great Britain, Kenya, Spain and Italy at our annual Embracing Global Engagement Conference on Wednesday, Oct. 18, in the Multipurpose Room (Room 228) in the Bowen-Thompson Student Union.

The Thompson Family Scholars student leadership team is having a bake sale! We have tons of delicious treats including cookies, cookie bars, muffins, breads and more. 1. Ancient myths rise from the dead in modern films

See our modern films in new ways by recognizing how ancient myths live and breathe within them. Carl Jung speaks of archetypes, Freud of the Electra complex and Phil Stutz of the Shadow that resides in all of us. Explore the timeless truths that are central to understanding myths and movies. Learn how to parse the structure of stories that transcend time and place. Develop skills to understand yourself and others by reflecting on what myths and films have to tell us about what makes life meaningful.

4. Ghostly Glow and Dance Flow: Free dance fitness class

Looking for a fun way to have a thriller of a night? Come join Falcon Fitness on Thursday, Oct. 19, for our Ghostly Glow and Dance Flow. This is a free dance fitness class that will feature many upbeat tunes and glow paint! Ghostly Glow and Dance Flow will be from 9:00 to 9:30 p.m. in Studio B, located on the bottom level of the Student Recreation Center. No experience is required and glow paint provided!

5. Hoops Night ft. Taylor's After Party

Are you ready for it?...

Join us as the BGSU Falcons hit the court for a ~bejeweled~ tip-off event, followed by a Taylor-themed after-party that will have you singing until the final buzzer. The night kicks off with the Falcons taking center stage in a series of competitions and contests as we introduce the 2023-2024 season as the team enters a new ~era~.

Once we know the teams ~all too well~ watch as the court and chords collide for a Taylor-themed dance party full of Taylor hits, confetti showers, neon lights and friendship bracelets. Get there early because the first 500 attendees will receive a Frieda's version limited edition poster and a front-row seat. Dress code? Channel your inner Taylor by wearing an outfit from your favorite era for a chance to win merch!

7. Monster Mash

Come escape the night with the Wellness Connection! Put your skills to the test at our Escape Room at this year’s Monster Mash! Hosted with many campus and student orgs, you are sure to get a treat or two! Monster Mash will be from 8 to 11 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 19, at the Student Recreation Center. This event will feature many haunted attractions such as a costume contest with prizes, therapy dogs, Dance Dance Revolution, Ghost Glow and Dance Flow and more! Wellness Halloween trick or treat bag filled with a mixture of Halloween and wellness tricks and treats. This event is free to all BGSU students.

10. Student org football box ticket giveaway

BGSU Undergraduate Student Government and the Office of Student Engagement are teaming up to showcase all the good work that the student orgs have done this year with an exciting giveaway! Student orgs can enter this contest for a chance to win tickets to stay in the Student Engagement Football Box for the BGSU Football vs Toledo game on Tuesday, Nov. 14.

Here's how your student org can enter:

  • Create an Instagram Reel telling us about what you do and/or how you have worked to encourage engagement within the BGSU community. You can use fun trends or simply create a highlight reel for your org; creativity is key!
  • Follow both @bgsuusg and @engagement_bgsu
  • Tag both @bgsuusg and @engagement_bgsu in your reel and use the hashtag #StudentOrgFootballBox.
  • Student orgs can enter their reel anytime throughout the month of October. The deadline to submit a reel is 11:59 p.m. on Oct. 31. A winner will be chosen by Nov. 8.

October is a month dedicated to breast health. To help you in prevention, Wood County Hospital is offering reserved 3-D mammogram days for BGSU faculty and staff on Oct 18 and 24.

Please note: Mammogram screenings need a doctor’s order prior to your mammogram appointment. Once you choose a time below, reach out to your primary care physician or OB/GYN for the order and have it sent to Wood County Hospital Women’s Center, by faxing to (419) 354-3166.

2. Celebrate Neurodivergent Individuals in Higher Education

Are you looking for ways to create an inclusive learning environment that caters to the unique strengths and needs of neurodivergent students? Join the Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE) for their upcoming hybrid workshop, Celebrate Neurodivergent Individuals in Higher Education: Classroom Strategies and Best Practices, from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 26, in Olscamp 106 and via Zoom.

Led by CFE faculty associates, Siva priya Santhanam, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, and Victoria VanUitert, Ph.D., this workshop will equip you with the practical tools you need to foster an environment where neurodivergent individuals thrive. Anyone interested in promoting neurodiversity and inclusivity in educational settings is welcome to join this session. 3. Deadline extended for nominations to ICS Executive Board 

Nominations and self-nominations are being accepted for the Executive Board of the Institute for the Study of Culture and Society (ICS) at BGSU, for a term to start in January 2024 and running until May 2026. Since its founding in 1996, ICS has spurred collaboration across traditional disciplinary boundaries in order to develop new knowledge. We are looking for committed individuals across BGSU, in a variety of administrative, staff and faculty roles, who believe in collaboration and community engagement for the public good. This cycle, we are looking to fill open Executive Board seats for faculty and/or staff in the following areas:

  • Fine or performing arts
  • Social sciences or natural sciences
  • Non-academic units (for example, administrative staff in Student Success or Residence Life).

If you have a passion for interdisciplinary collaborations, community engagement and high-impact programming, please consider applying to be a board member; if you know someone who fits this description, please nominate them. Meetings typically occur on the first Friday of each month via Zoom.

To nominate someone for the board (or to self-nominate), send an email to ics@bgsu.edu with the person’s name, email address, title and program/unit/department. Each nominee will be asked to submit a brief statement of interest and relevant experience (250 words) and a CV/resumé. The deadline for nominations is 5 p.m. on Nov. 8. 4. Need help creating an engaging syllabus?

Thinking about the upcoming semester? Want to revise your syllabus and, more importantly, get students to engage with it? The Center for Faculty Excellence’s workshop, Designing a Course Syllabus that Encourages Growth Mindsets and Engages Students, is designed to help you critically evaluate your syllabus or existing syllabi to determine the messaging sent to students.

During this in-workshop, you will work with peers to develop syllabi language to turn fixed mindset phrasing into growth mindset phrasing. Facilitated by CFE Faculty Associate and Assistant Teaching Professor Jennifer Stuart, this workshop will be held in-person from 2 to 3 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 13, in Olscamp 106.
