Understanding Dobbs Discussion Series
Presented by Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies and The Center for Women and Gender Equity
Title IX & Sexual Violence with Kathy Mull and Lakeshia Dowlen
Thursday, Nov. 10, noon to 1:00 p.m. in Hayes 203
Because sexual violence sometimes leads to pregnancy, the Dobbs decision will have significant impact on the availability of abortion for survivors. Learn more about how the Dobbs decision impacts sexual violence services and protections, including Title IX. Kathy Mull is the Director of the Cocoon Shelter and Lakeshia Dowlen is the Title IX Coordinator at BGSU.
Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization (2022) is a landmark decision of the U.S. Supreme Court that has overturned Roe v. Wade (1973) and Planned Parenthood v. Casey (1992). The Dobbs decision states that the Constitution of the United States does not confer a right to abortion. Much is unknown in the wake of this landmark decision. The Understanding Dobbs discussion series explores many of the issues the Dobbs decision has uncovered, deepening our collective knowledge and fostering civil dialogue. This is a brown-bag series and participants are encouraged to bring their own lunches.

5. Native American artist John Hitchcock lecture TONIGHT!

Hitchcock is a contemporary artist and musician of Comanche, Kiowa and Northern European descent. He currently works in multimedia including neon, textiles, printmaking, sound and video to reclaim narratives of resilience and survival. He uses visual storytelling to understand his relationships to community, land and culture. Hitchcock’s artwork consists of abstract representations, language and intense color referencing his Kaku’s (Comanche grandmother's) beadwork and regalia. His artworks are based on his childhood memories and stories of growing up in the Wichita Mountains of Oklahoma on Comanche Tribal lands next to the U.S. field artillery military base Fort Sill.

4. Spanish for Educators - offered this spring!
This spring, SPAN 2030-1001 (#16806), will meet TuTh 2:30 to 3:45 p.m.
“Spanish for Educators” aims to help BGSU teacher candidates better serve the growing population of Latinx students. From 2011-2021, there was a 76% increase in the Hispanic student population in Ohio (ODE Facts and Figures 2022). This class will familiarize teachers with U.S. varieties of Spanish, equipping them with the phrases necessary for basic classroom conversation, acquainting them with the concept of translanguaging and helping them understand ways to incorporate this practice into their classes.
The class will also train students on how to effectively use Google Translate to communicate with parents (and avoid insulting them as GT defaults to an informal register). We will also examine Latinx family cultural practices to better understand different cultural approaches to education. The class is designed for all teachers, pre-K, elementary, middle and secondary levels.
