In May 2021 Bowling Green State University initiated a year-long pilot program for faculty and staff hiring. The University requires a diversity statement from faculty, administrative staff, and select classified staff applicants in our hiring process by providing a question that will encourage job applicants to address how they can contribute to a culture of equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging which includes respect for other and an openness to differing perspectives and identities. As with all pilot programs, consistent review of the process, analysis of feedback, and open communication is crucial to the success of any new program. Upon review of the current process and based on feedback received regarding the diversity statement process, recommendations to further develop the process were proposed. These recommendations were reviewed and approved by the Diversity and Belonging Council on Sept. 9, 2021, and the President’s Cabinet on Sept. 14, 2021.
Effective immediately, an updated rubric for assessing the diversity statements is available for use during the documentation review portion of our recruitment process for faculty, administrative staff, and select classified staff applicants. The diversity statement rubric is available on the Diversity and Belonging site and on the Human Resources site.
Questions regarding the application of the new rubric can be directed to the Division of Diversity and Belonging or the Office of Human Resources.
