1. The Amsterdam sign project photo exhibition

Dr. Matthew Donahue from the Department of Popular Culture is exhibiting his "commercial archeology" photography research titled The Amsterdam Sign Project, at BGSU's Jerome Library (1st floor) and Grounds for Thought Coffeeshop until Wednesday, March 31.

Commercial archeology is archeological research and documentation of commercial businesses, ranging from vernacular commercial buildings to business signs and storefronts. For this project, Dr. Donahue took over 3000 photos of business signs and storefronts in Amsterdam, Netherlands, some of which are on exhibit at these two locations. This is a continuation of Dr. Donahue’s research on the popular culture of the Netherlands.

4. This week The Mirnavator on body positivity!

There are many words & phrases in reference to one of the most important parts of our existence as human beings—the body. Bodies - we use them & we envision them to somehow be different in the future. Have you ever paused to wonder why it is we think about our bodies in a certain way or what we prioritize certain aspects of our bodies over others? This interactive workshop will look deeply into how & why we perceive our bodies in a certain way, opening up the conversation on how we could learn to love & appreciate them even more. You will dig deeper into the body-image messaging of your past & work individually to reset your body narrative to reflect the power you have now & have within. This is especially important as we find ourselves dealing with the emotional, mental, & physical stress & trauma of the current global crisis.

Open to all members of the BGSU community. Event: Wednesday, February 10 at 7 p.m. Register at bgsu.edu/TheMirnavator

KEYNOTE and Q & A with Talithia Williams

Tuesday, February 16 | 6 - 7:15 p.m.

(Student Session, Noon - 12 - 12:45 p.m.)

Big Data Expert, Math Professor & Host of NOVA Wonders

A host of the PBS series, NOVA Wonders, Dr. Talithia Williams is a groundbreaking professor, popular TED speaker, inspiring author and passionate STEM/STEAM advocate. She has made it her life's work to get people of all ages and backgrounds excited about the bold possibilities of a STEM education and to “STEMpower” women and minorities to enter these professions. Her latest book, Power in Numbers: The Rebel Women of Mathematics reflects Williams’ passion to re-brand the field of mathematics as anything but dry, technical or male-dominated. Renowned for her popular TED Talk, “Own Your Body’s Data,” she advocates for all of us to deploy data as a way of taking charge of our own health. A vibrant, engaging and energizing speaker, Dr. Williams demystifies data, statistics, probabilities and the mathematical process in amusing and insightful ways. She also passionately champions the contributions of scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians and their vital role in transforming our future.

Described by audiences as engaging, relevant, funny, accessible and a joy to work with, Dr. Williams captivates and inspires with her contagious enthusiasm for STEM in general and math in particular. Applying the data-driven approach made famous in her TED talk to a range of subjects, she takes sophisticated numerical concepts and makes them understandable to a wide audience, debunking perceptions with an energizing call to “show me the data!”
