A letter from the CIO
Fall semester 2017 started with a bang! Faculty, staff and departments across campus worked tirelessly to get students settled and to kick off another academic year at Bowling Green State University. Many thanks to all, your efforts did not go unnoticed. In fact, below are some of the amazing feats in technology that took place during the start of school.

On Tuesday, August 22, the second day of fall semester, the BGSU campus exceeded six (6) gigabytes of data per second on the network for the first time ever. Visually, six gigabytes of data is 6000 - four file cabinet drawers full of paper each second! Seven years ago, the campus network traffic was less than 1/12 of that amount; thank you Netflix and YouTube!

Students, faculty and staff are known for bringing ITS surprises when they return to campus. Take our most recent surprise – 47,000 new devices attached to the network, with 30,000 of them in residence halls and 98% of the total connected wirelessly. Talk about a busy move-in weekend! Amazingly enough, only 12 of those 47,000 new devices had malware on them!

Twenty-two new and updated classrooms and labs in University Hall, Mosley Hall and the Education Building were added to the growing number (85) of renovated classroom spaces for teaching our students. This will leave about 50 Grid classrooms and labs left to renovate.

In addition to our start of school endeavors, the ITS applications team has been busy upgrading several of the University’s most important applications. Back in 2005, BGSU installed Oracle’s PeopleSoft ERP (enterprise resource planning) system, comprised of three major components: Campus Solutions (CSS), Financial Management System (FMS) and Human Capital Management (HCM). By 2018, we will have completed upgrading all three systems to the latest and LAST version of PeopleSoft. Once complete, only tools updates, patches and fixes will need to be applied. End of Life for the PeopleSoft system is 2027.

Thanks again for a fantastic start to the school year!

Sincerely,

John Ellinger, CIO
