How to Use An AED

These AED steps should be used when caring for a non-breathing child aged 8 or older who weighs more than 55 pounds, or an adult.

After checking the scene and ensuring that the person needs help, you should ask a bystander to call 911 for help, then:

1. Complete the CHECK and CALL steps
2. As soon as an AED is available, turn it on and follow the voice prompts
3. Remove clothing and attach pads correctly

  • Remove all clothing covering the chest. If necessary, wipe the chest dry
  • Place one pad on the upper right side of the chest
  • Place the other pad on the lower left side of the chest, a few inches below the left armpit
  • Note: If the pads may touch, place one pad in the middle of the chest and the other pad on the back, between the shoulder blades

4. Plug the pad connector cable into the AED, if necessary
5. Prepare to let the AED analyze the heart’s rhythm

  • Make sure no one is touching the person
  • Say, “CLEAR!” in a loud, commanding voice

6. Deliver a shock, if the AED determines one is needed

  • Make sure no one is touching the person
  • Say, “CLEAR!” in a loud, commanding voice
  • Push the “shock” button to deliver the shock

After the AED delivers the shock, or if no shock is advised, immediately start CPR, beginning with compressions

Visually Impaired Persons

  • Tell the person the nature of the emergency.
  • Act as a “sighted guide” by offering an arm for guidance.
  • Tell the person where you are and where obstacles are located.
  • Upon reaching a safe location, orient the person to the location and ask if further assistance is needed.

Hearing Impaired Persons

  • Write a note regarding the emergency situation, the nearest evacuation route and where to meet.
    • Sample script: “FIRE! Go out the rear door on your right. Now! Meet outside on the front lawn.”
  • Turn the light switch on and off to gain attention, use gestures or a written note for further information and instructions. DO NOT USE THIS TECHNIQUE IF NATURAL GAS SMELL IS PRESENT.

 Individuals using Wheelchairs/Crutches (Non-ambulatory)

  • Assist with evacuation of the building and proceed to the closest Evacuation Rally Point (if access to exit does not require use of elevator).
    • Most non-ambulatory persons will be able to exit safely without much assistance if they are located in an area that has exits that lead directly to the outside.
  • If a person is on the upper floor, assist the inner stairwell away from smoke, vapors or any other hazard.
  • If the individual is unable to evacuate, let them know that help is on the way. Tell the individual that you are leaving and will notify the Evacuation Rally Point Leader of their location within the building.

If you are assisting a non-ambulatory person, be aware that some people have minimal ability to move and lifting them may be dangerous to their well-being. Some individuals have very little upper trunk and neck strength.

Frequently, non-ambulatory people have respiratory complications.

  • Remove them from smoke and vapors immediately.
  • Those with electronic respirators should be given priority assistance, as their ability to breathe may be seriously in danger.
  • Contact the Dean's Office at 419-372-2842.
  • After hours/weekends: call Campus Police at 419-372-2346.

Alerts are sent via AlertBG (text/email) and campus sirens. "Tornado Warning" means a tornado has been sighted or indicated by radar and staff and patrons need to shelter immediately.

  • Emergency Shelter Locations:
    • Move to the 1st Floor
      • Pallister Conference Room
      • Room 142
      • and the space outside these rooms
      • If those spaces are full, use secondary locations in the Testing Center, first floor restrooms, adjoining hallways, and stairwells.
    • Do not use elevators.
    • Avoid the atrium, entrance doors, and the upper floors.
    • Shelter in place until the warning has expired or all clear is given via AlertBG.

Building personnel should be aware of occupants with disabilities utilizing their facilities and ensure that they are successfully evacuated or sheltered during an emergency, if it is safe to do so.
