1. Last call for zine submissions on class in America

The Browne Popular Culture Library is compiling a zine as a companion to the upcoming class conference All of This is Temporary: A Conference on Class Consciousness and Popular Culture!. The submission deadline is quickly approaching!

This zine will be a collection of public responses to the broad topic of class in America. We welcome responses in the form of prose, poetry and/or visual art. Each submission will be included as a single page in the collaborative zine.

Submissions should explore class-related themes, ideas and experiences. You can address questions like:

  • What is your experience of class difference on a college campus?
  • Why are class studies important?
  • What does “class consciousness” mean to you?

Interpret these ideas or questions in the manner and 2D medium of your choice. Your zine page should be in the form of an 8.5x11" document or sheet of paper. This zine will be distributed after the conference in April 2023 and will also be available electronically.

Submit your zine page by Saturday, April 15, at 11:59 p.m.

Happy zine-making! If you have any questions, please email us at classcon@bgsu.edu.

10. All of This is Temporary: A Conference on Class Consciousness

Please join the School of Cultural and Critical Studies and the Browne Popular Culture Library for "All of This is Temporary: A Conference on Class Consciousness and Popular Culture."

  • Friday, April 14, from 1 to 7 p.m.
  • Saturday, April 15, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Both days will take place at the Pallister Conference Room, Jerome Library, first floor. Free for in-person and online attendees.

The need for class consciousness in universities is greater than ever. Few students are provided the tools to understand what is happening to America’s most vulnerable and therefore have no understanding of how to address and combat it. Lower-income students often find themselves lost and unsupported within an academic system that neglects class. This conference aims to facilitate dialog concerning the issue of class in our culture by means of traditional academic presentations, as well as in workshops and creative forums.

Major discussion topics will include:

  • Class issues in academia, politics and the global sphere
  • Unionization, tenants’ rights and other topics that affect local workers
  • Class representation and analysis in popular culture (television, movies, comics and more)

Our keynote speaker, Walter Benn Michaels, will give a presentation titled “Merit Raises and the Consciousness of the Professoriate” on Saturday, April 15.

Visit our website for more information and a full conference schedule..
