2. Dance Marathon at BGSU 2023!

Dance Marathon at BGSU 2023 will occur on Sunday, April 2, from 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Perry Field House! The theme this year is "The Magic of Miracles"! There will be inflatables, carnival games, face painters, balloon artists, caricatures, 12 hours of on-stage entertainment and free food! Our goal is to raise money for the local Children's Miracle Network Hospitals and change the lives of children! Our Instagram is @dm_bgsu and the link to register is in our bio!

3. Film and Media Festival starts tomorrow!

The Film and Media Festival celebrates short films made by BGSU students. Sponsored by the University Film Organization, BG Reel and the Department of Theatre and Film. Free and open to the public, all events will be in BTSU 206.

The schedule is as follows:

  • Friday, March 31 - 7 to 10 p.m.
  • Saturday, April 1 - 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Sunday, April 2 - Award Ceremony at 6 p.m.
  • Saturday, April 1, will also feature carnival booths from 5 to 7 p.m.

4. Let's Talk!

Let's Talk is a free and confidential service available to BGSU students. Students can meet for a brief, informal, 15-minute consultation with BGSU Counseling Center staff that do not take the place of therapy. Let's Talk consultations are not appropriate for urgent concerns or mental health emergencies. During this consultation, BGSU clinicians will listen to your concerns and offer support, information and resources.

5. Poker Walk and wellness event - April 5

Make time for self-care and a movement break. You deserve it!

The wellness event will take place on Wednesday, April 5. Stop by any time between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Perry Field House Track Room.

Event highlights:

  • Poker Walk: Go the distance of your choice (half mile, one mile or more) and stop at the Poker Walk stations to collect your five-card poker hand. The top three individuals with the best poker hand win a prize and all who participate are entered into a raffle. No prior knowledge of poker is needed to participate.
  • Pickleball, table tennis and cornhole
  • PAWS Team therapy dogs – relax and unwind with furry friends
  • Mindfulness and self-care resources
  • DIY flower pots
  • Giveaways and raffle prizes – smoothie blender, bike and free healthy snacks
  • Free blood pressure screenings

The event is free for faculty, staff, students and community members.

6. Ohanami Cherry Blossom Festival this Sunday!

The 22nd annual Ohanami Cherry Blossom Festival will be held this Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. in the Lenhart Grand Ballroom, BTSU. Free and open to the public! Many hands-on activities, including: Japanese calligraphy, Origami, Kimono try-ons, Sushi and Tea tasting, along with authentic Japanese refreshments and more. 7. Using storytelling and sociology to reimagine environmental sustainability

In episode 9 of the BG Ideas podcast, Dr. Nathan Hensley, associate professor of sustainability education at BGSU, and Dr. Margaret Weinberger, a lecturer in the BGSU Department of Sociology, discuss their recent team-taught course “Reimagining Sustainability”, which used storytelling and sociology to create new approaches to environmental sustainability.

Our sound engineers for this episode were DeAnna MacKeigan and Marco Mendoza. Research was provided by Sophia Michalski, with editing by Joe Elia.

8. Shanklin Award for Research Excellence finalist presentations

The finalists for this award were selected by a panel of 19 judges from multiple disciplines around campus based on the research being interdisciplinary, clarity and quality. There are two finalists within each division presenting their research: Arts and Humanities, Mathematics and Sciences, and Social and Behavioral Sciences.

Join us on Wednesday, April 5, from 3 to 5 p.m. in BTSU 308 to hear more about the finalists' research they have been doing on campus! Presentation topics include: an analysis of Jocelyn Schitt from Schitt's Creek, local government in Bowling Green, gender roles, fusogenic function, the 2021 German foreign aid package and differential prey bBehavioral responses. As you can see, there is a wide array of topics being discussed, so this will be an event where you can expect to learn a lot!

All faculty, staff, students (both undergraduate and graduate) and community members are invited to attend this event. You do not need to RSVP, but encourage you to express interest via the BGSU Calendar.

11. Save the date: CFE Teaching and Learning Summit

The Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE) is excited to host the 2023 BGSU Teaching and Learning Summit. The theme for this year’s summit is Teaching for the Public Good. Teaching for the public good means that we, as the BGSU teaching community, are actively engaged in providing equitable learning experiences for all our students. We will utilize this year’s summit to collectively reflect, celebrate achievements, and challenge ourselves to continuously contribute to successful student outcomes. The keynote speaker for the Summit is Dr. James Lang, author of Small Teaching: Everyday Lessons from the Science of Learning.

12. Free electronics recycling event this Saturday!

What do a broken radio, a box of batteries and an outdated computer have in common? They are just a few examples of what can be recycled this Saturday, April 1, at the annual free Community Electronics Recycling Event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Slater Family Ice Arena parking lot. A large variety of electronic items can be recycled. While the basic guidelines include things with a plug or that are battery-operated, the full list/details can be viewed at the Electronic Waste Recycling website.

No CRT screens, tube TVs or light bulbs and no data storage items such as CDs, floppy discs, VHS tapes, etc.

13. Presentation by Ohio Right to Life CEO, Peter Range

The proposed constitutional amendment on Planned Parenthood’s November 2023 Ballot Initiative in Ohio would allow things such as eliminate the Down Syndrome Nondiscrimination Act, allow chemical abortions on demand over the counter without doctor involvement, and eliminate health and safety standards for abortion clinics. 1. Zine workshop in the Pop. Culture Library

The organizers of the Class Conference will be hosting a Zine workshop in the Browne Popular Culture Library (Jerome Library, fourth floor) on Monday, April 3, from 5 to 8 p.m.!

For the first hour, Manuscripts Archivist Tyne Lowe will talk about the history of zine culture, share some examples of zines from the Popular Culture Library and her personal collection, and walk through some steps for folding a small zine.

Spend the rest of the workshop making your own zine(s)! We will provide paper, scissors, glue and collage materials. If you'd like, you may also create a page for the collaborative Class Conference Zine. Visit the All of This is Temporary conference website for more information.

2. Interested in TV Studies? This Popular Culture class is for you

POPC 4600 101W 41589 How to Read TV. This online course will look at how contemporary TV genres and cultural trends can be used to understand different topics. Some of these narratives are, virality, complexity, intersectionality, feminism, transmedia, neoliberalism and fandom. 3. Neurodivergent support group

The neurodivergent support group meets from 1 to 2 p.m. on Fridays at the Counseling Center, 104 College Park.

Neurodivergent: Having a mind that functions in ways that differ from societal standards of “normal.”

This group aims to provide students with a place to share their struggles, give and receive support from others, and discuss their lived experiences without having to mask who they are. Each session will start with check-ins and introductions. Students can then ask for time to discuss a challenge they are experiencing or a topic they wish to discuss.

This group is open to all BGSU students. A formal diagnosis is not required. Those who are questioning a neurodivergent identity are welcome. Students may attend weekly or drop in as needed.

5. Online introduction to African American studies summer course

ETHN 1200 1001 (41882) is a fully remote online course being offered in the first six-week session on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 1:00 to 2:15 p.m. An introduction to the history of black studies, tracing it from its origins in the social, cultural and political struggles for human and civil rights to the various intellectual currents which have defined the field as a discipline. It places special emphasis on the United States but also considers key authors, historical figures and social movements from the Black Diaspora. 7. Research study participants needed!

BGSU undergraduate students (18+) are needed to participate in an online survey about the transition from high school to college and its impact on their mental health and well-being. This study focuses primarily on the mental health of first-year students, but all undergraduate students are eligible to participate.

Participation requires taking an online survey lasting approximately 5–10-minutes.

2. Interested in ethnic and gender studies? Online grad class offered this summer

ETHN 6820 501W 42695 – Applied Ethnic and Gender Studies.

This course will examine some of the practical applications of Ethnic Studies and Women’s Gender and Sexuality Studies, through academic works applying their lessons to different types of work and first-hand accounts from graduates in these fields. Taken together, they will help reveal why these frames of analysis matter in the modern workplace and how they can benefit professionals across different vocations. This class can be applied to the Ethnic Studies and Women’s Studies Grad Certificates but is open to all graduate students in other programs who are interested in ethnic and gender studies.

4. Classified Staff Council Scholarship: deadline Friday!

Reminder: The Classified Staff Council Scholarship is given annually to selected, current classified staff employees and/or their spouse or dependent(s) that are currently enrolled at BGSU and have a minimum 2.5 grade point average. Applicants must be an undergraduate or graduate student in a degree-seeking program (either full-time or part-time) that has at least one semester of coursework remaining at BGSU prior to graduation. Applicants must have completed 12 credit hours at BGSU. The application is in the Searchable Scholarship Guide. You must log in to the Searchable Scholarship Guide using your myBGSU.

The recipient will be selected by a committee of representatives from across campus based on the criteria above. All applicants will be notified of the final decision and the award will be officially presented at the Classified Staff Council awards banquet on May 18.

5. Call for nominations to ICS Executive Board

We are seeking nominations and self-nominations to serve on the Executive Board of ICS. For this cycle, we are particularly interested in nominations for those in the social sciences or natural sciences. If you are a faculty or staff member with a passion for interdisciplinary collaborations, community engagement and high-impact programming, please consider applying to be a board member; if you know someone who fits this description, please nominate them.

To nominate someone for the board, send an email to ics@bgsu.edu with the person’s name, email address, title and program/unit/department. We will ask all nominees to submit a statement of interest and relevant experience (500 words maximum) and a CV. The term of service is three years, beginning in the fall of 2024.

The deadline for nominations is 5 p.m. on Friday, April 7.
