The Center for Women and Gender Equity host Drop-in Dismantling - every other Thursday at 2 p.m. via Zoom! Drop-in Dismantling sessions provide a virtual space for all students, faculty and staff to talk about strategies for challenging racism and colonization in our daily lives. The topic and activities change every week, so join us as you are able to engage in some ongoing (un)learning!
This week's topic is "Language as an Agent of White Supremacy.” We hope to have some fruitful discussion on continuing our unlearning and our efforts. Email cwge@bgsu.edu for the Zoom link.
Workshop Description:
As environmentalists, we often forget that when we’re advocating for the environment, we’re advocating for all parts of the environment, meaning people too. When we are thinking of people, we should be prioritizing those who are disproportionately burdened by environmental exposures. But what environmental exposures are we talking about exactly? The objectives of this workshop are to 1) break down the many ways we can define our environment, 2) to truly understand the meanings of environmental justice and environmental racism, and 3) to understand how this topic intersects with our careers as environmentalists, social and health inequities and even other disciplines that forget how their actions contribute to environmental racism.

Failures of Popular Culture Studies
by Dr. Jeremy Wallach
Saturday, March 6
12-1 p.m.
Popular culture studies have spent so much time either defensively justifying its existence or celebrating itself that fundamental contradictions in the field remain unaddressed more than half a century into its existence. My presentation outlines my own 25-year intellectual journey navigating a course between the Scylla of critical arrogance and the Charybdis of uncritical fannish enthusiasm. I conclude by asserting that I have found the only way forward to be to acknowledge fully the political context in which we work, in which most forms of popular culture are openly and mercilessly derided, and our own subject positions as both scholars and active participants in popular culture broadly defined.

Join the Center for Women and Gender Equity for a research seminar titled: Personal and Collective Healing for Women of Color Using the Martial Arts: Preliminary Results of a Qualitative Dissertation
Trauma and cultural psychology have been critiqued for their failure to account for factors of relationship and place in trauma research, which may reinforce legacies of colonization and negatively affect mental health. Feminist conceptual frameworks and decolonizing research methods have been suggested as tools that can transform the discipline of psychological research and practice offering new possibilities for thinking through research and practices of trauma recovery. This presentation will outline preliminary findings as the researcher, Jacqueline Barco, a doctoral candidate in Counseling Psychology at the University of Utah and martial arts practitioner for over 15 years, addresses these gaps in psychological trauma using feminist and decolonizing frameworks and individual narratives as data to explore the impact of colonization on women of color and how women of color make meaning of their own healing and recovery from trauma through participation in martial arts. The presentation will include a discussion of how the use of feminist and women of color research methodologies can be transformative in challenging the discipline to think and listen differently.

Join Student Engagement, Diversity and Inclusion in conversation with Jen Manion, Associate Professor of History at Amherst College and author of Female Husbands.
Long before people identified as transgender or lesbian, there were female husbands and the women who loved them. Female husbands - people assigned female who transed gender, lived as men, and married women - were true queer pioneers.
Moving deftly from the colonial era to just before the First World War, Jen Manion uncovers the riveting and very personal stories of ordinary people who lived as men despite tremendous risk, danger, violence, and threat of punishment. Female Husbands weaves the story of their lives in relation to broader social, economic, and political developments in the United States and the United Kingdom, while also exploring how attitudes towards female husbands shifted in relation to transformations in gender politics and women's rights, ultimately leading to the demise of the category of 'female husband' in the early twentieth century. Groundbreaking and influential, Female Husbands offers a dynamic, varied, and complex history of the LGBTQ past.
This conversation will examine womxn's history through an intersectional, queer and trans lense. Please join us on Instagram Live @officialbgsufirelands

“Information literacy (IL) is the set of integrated abilities encompassing the reflective discovery of information, the understanding of how information is produced and valued, and the use of information in creating new knowledge and participating ethically in communities of learning.” (Association of College and Research Libraries, 2015). In this two-part workshop, faculty will integrate information literacy knowledge practices and dispositions into a new or existing course unit, assignment, learning activity, or program.
