2. CURS Summer Grant Application Round now open

Date and Time: At 5 p.m. on Monday, April 1.

Submit your application!

Description: The application round for the CURS Summer Grant is now open with a submission deadline of Monday, April 1 (one-week extension is possible upon request by email to cmora@bgsu.edu). Applications can be submitted online under “Summer CURS Grant”.

Undergraduate research/scholarly/creative projects with a faculty mentor in any discipline are funded with up to $500 for the project cost ($750 for a group project of 3-5 students). Each student is expected to work 23 hours per week on the project for 10 weeks during the summer semester and will receive a stipend of up to $2,500 for their work paid out in installments for the duration of the project. Start dates are flexible based upon project needs.

Application consists of:

  • Online form (student(s) information, faculty mentor(s) information, general project information)
  • Project narrative (2-3 pages including project title, introduction, scholarly question/topic, description of what student(s) is/are planning to do for the project, anticipated outcomes and brief discussion of how the project’s anticipated outcomes related to the project’s scholarly question/topic and how they fit into the current state of the project’s discipline)
  • Budget (itemized list of anticipated purchases with individual costs as well as the total amount requested)
  • Reference Letter(s) by faculty mentor(s) indicating their support of the student and the project

3. Falconettes Dance Team 2nd Annual Showcase

Location: BTSU Multi-Purpose Room

Description: The BGSU Falconettes Dance Team is hosting their 2nd Annual Showcase to display their 2023-2024 dance routines! They also will be performing additional dances with different styles that are choreographed by members of the team, including solos, duets, trios, a line dance and an exclusive Jazz routine debut! This event is a great opportunity to help fundraise for the Falconettes and support local dancers! There will also be a flower and encouragement card sale before the show and intermission! What can be recycled? Anything with a cord or that's battery operated. Computers and IT equipment, wires/cables/cords, speakers, radios, phones, AV equipment, video games, household appliances, power tools, batteries, fans and more! See our website for details. We do not accept tube TVs (we only take flat screens) or CRT screens.

Description: Get paid a $5 Amazon or Starbucks gift card to taste cookies and bread. To participate, you must be at least 18 years old, have no food allergies and have no issues with your sense of taste and smell. If you qualify, you will be asked to eat a cookie sample and a bread sample. You will then be asked to answer some questions about those foods and other questions. This taste test will happen at the Health and Human Services Building in room 133 on April 1-4 and should take about 10-12 minutes. You may choose to enter your name if your instructor has offered extra credit for participation and you would like to receive extra credit for participating. Your answers will not be linked to your name. You can also pick a snack after completing the study.

We have published articles on topics ranging from archival research on artwork produced during Argentina's "Dirty Wars," the pre-COVID pandemic rise of zoological diseases and depictions of imperialism in literary texts written during the U.S.'s occupation of Iraq. We feature a "From Praxis to Press" section in which students analyze the experiential learning experiences they acquired through study abroad, internship or community-based learning programs.

Abstracts, consisting of 250-350 words, are due by 5 p.m. on Friday, April 1. Please submit your abstracts to co-editors, Dr. Lara Martin Lengel at lengell@bgsu.edu and Dr. Rachel Ann Walsh walshr@bgsu.edu.

1. All-College Book Author, Putsata Reang

Description: Putsata Reang is an author and a journalist whose writings have appeared in The New York Times, Politico, The Guardian, Ms and The Seattle Times, among other publications. Born in Cambodia and raised in rural Oregon, surrounded by berry farms where she and her family hustled to earn their middle-class existence.

Reang has lived and worked in more than a dozen countries including, Afghanistan and Thailand. She is an alum of Hedgebrook, Mineral School and Kimmel Harding Nelson residencies. She is a 2019 Jack Straw fellow. In 2005, she received an Alicia Patterson Journalism Fellowship that took her back to Cambodia to report on landless farmers. She currently teaches memoir writing at the University of Washington School of Professional and Continuing Education.

Her latest book, "Ma and Me", explores the long legacy of inherited trauma and the crushing weight of cultural and filial duty, in the context of her journey to come out to her family and claim her identity. Her memoir explores the glades of displacement felt by children of refugees and the overlay of emotional exile that comes with being gay.
