BGSU part of team to receive funding through Competitive Research Program HAB Awards

Bowling Green State University is part of a team receiving funding for a project to improve the rapid detection of cyanotoxins related to algal blooms to provide managers with timely information on risk and minimize exposure to stakeholders. “Monitoring and Event Response for Harmful Algal Blooms: Portable Tin Detection Technology to Support Great Lakes Decision Support Tools” was among the grant project recipients announced Oct. 1 by the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) Competitive Research Program Harmful Algal Bloom Awards.

LimnoTech Inc., MBio Diagnostics Inc., NOAA NCCOS, The Ohio State University, University of Michigan Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research and the University of Toledo are also part of the award team.

Obituaries

Kathy Baltz, 59, died Sept. 19. A 1992 BGSU alumna, she worked for 29 years as the administrative assistant in the Department of Psychology. A memorial service will be held Oct. 12 in North Baltimore. View arrangements.

Robert Blackwell, 82, professor emeritus of special education, died Sept. 27. He taught at the University from 1969-95, serving as department chair and Faculty Senate member for 10 years.

Barbara Y. Keller, 80, died Sept. 20. After receiving her Ph.D. from the University, she worked at BGSU for 36 years, in positions including assistant dean of women, director of residence life and as associate dean of students.

Mary Beckinsale, former president and director of the Studio Art College International (SACI), the education abroad arts program in Florence, Italy, died Sept. 22. One of the BGSU School of Art's closest international partners, she initiated BGSU’s partnership with SACI in 1993. The University presented her an honorary Doctorate of Art in 2010 for her tireless pursuit of excellence, internationalism, creative freedom, and public service. An internationally recognized art educator and art historian, she led one of the premier study abroad institutions in Italy and worldwide until her retirement in 2013.
