Authors and Artists Criteria

The Friends of the University Libraries is an organization that supports the programs and activities of the University Libraries, archives, and special collections. Membership in The Friends is voluntary and open to all interested individuals.

Guiding Principle for Authors and Artists Recognition
The scholarly and creative achievements of active and retired Bowling Green State University faculty and staff extend the bodies of knowledge in academic disciplines, contribute to the culture, and enhance the reputation of the University. The Friends of the University Libraries honor BGSU faculty and staff members for their scholarly publications and artistic achievements through the annual Authors and Artists Recognition Program and Reception.

Purpose
The purpose of the Authors and Artists Recognition Program and Reception is to publicly express appreciation for BGSU authors and artists for their important contributions to their disciplines, the culture, and the University.

Selection Procedure
The Friends Board Awards and Recognitions Committee, selects the honorees from nominations that meet specified criteria.

Key Terms -The following definitions are provided to assist in the nomination process. They are listed in the order in which they appear in the "Criteria for Recognition" section.

Commercial press—for-profit publishing houses such as Academic Press, Addison-Wesley, Blackwell, Human Kinetics, McGraw Hill, Oryx Press, Prentice Hall, Sage, and Wiley

Scholarly press—not-for-profit publishers such as university presses, learned societies, scholarly associations, and research libraries (e.g., American Historical Association, American Psychiatric Publishing, Beacon Press, Brookings Institution Press, Getty Publications, The Johns Hopkins University Press, National Gallery of Art, and ISI Books).

Endorsement—a brief narrative that addresses the importance of the nominated work within the field and notes the significance of the accomplishment.

Peer-review—assessment of scholarly work by the author's peers.

Review process—the procedure by which journal editors determine whether a manuscript is suitable for publication; the review process is usually described in the journal under headings such as "Editorial Policy" or "Instructions to Authors."

Regional, national, international—Characterization of an event as "regional," "national," or "international" depends not on its location, but on its intended audience and its significance. The intended audience and the significance of the event must be established in the endorsement. 

Premiere/debut—initial public appearance or presentation.

Criteria for Recognition 
The minimum criterion for a BOOK AUTHOR is the publication by a commercial or scholarly press of the first edition or substantially revised subsequent edition of a scholarly book or textbook. The nomination must be accompanied by a review printed in an appropriate publication for the field OR an endorsement by the nominee's University unit. The minimum criterion for a BOOK CHAPTER AUTHOR is the publication by a commercial or scholarly press of the original version or a substantially revised subsequent version of a book chapter. The nomination must be accompanied by a review printed in an appropriate publication for the field OR an endorsement by the nominee's University unit.

The minimum criterion for a JOURNAL ARTICLE(S) AUTHOR is the publication of an article in a peer-reviewed journal of national or international standing and distribution. The nomination must be accompanied by a copy of the article.

The minimum criterion for special recognition for a JOURNAL ARTICLE(S) AUTHOR is recognition or commendation for an article (e.g., "Best Paper") within its field during the past academic year, although the article itself may have been published previously. The nomination must be accompanied by a copy of the commendation.

The minimum criterion for a CREATIVE WRITING AUTHOR is publication or evidence of the performance of the piece (poetry, drama, fiction, nonfiction) that is above and beyond normal University activities and is on a regional, national, or international level. The nomination must be accompanied by a review printed in an appropriate publication, a copy of the page that identifies the publication and members of its editorial board, OR an endorsement by the nominee's University unit.

The minimum criterion for the recognition of a VISUAL ARTIST (painter, sculptor, glass artist, printmaker, photographer) is an exhibition that is above and beyond normal University activities and is on a regional, national, or international level. The nomination must be accompanied by a photograph of the work and documentation that includes details of the exhibition (sponsor, dates) and a review printed in an appropriate publication, OR an endorsement by the nominee’s University unit. 

The minimum criterion for a BOOK EDITOR is the publication by a commercial or scholarly press of the first edition or substantially revised subsequent edition of a scholarly book or textbook, including a significant contribution (i.e., one or more chapters) by the editor. The nomination must be accompanied by a review printed in an appropriate publication for the field OR an endorsement by the nominee's University unit.

The minimum criterion for a JOURNAL EDITOR is editorship of a peer-reviewed national or international journal. The nomination must be accompanied a copy of the page that lists the members of its editorial board. This recognition will be given only once to an editor for that particular journal.

The minimum criterion for recognition of an ARTIST is a premiere/debut exhibition that is above and beyond normal University activities and is on a regional, national, or international level. The nomination must be accompanied by a review printed in an appropriate publication for the field OR an endorsement by the nominee's University unit.

The minimum criterion for the recognition of a THEATRE/MEDIA ARTIST is a design, production, original script, or a premiere/debut performance that is above and beyond normal University activities and is on a regional, national, or international level. The nomination must be accompanied by a review printed in an appropriate publication for the field OR an endorsement by the nominee's University unit.

The minimum criterion for the recognition of a MUSICAL ARTIST is a sound recording or a premiere/debut performance that is above and beyond normal University activities and is on a regional, national, or international level. The nomination must be accompanied by a review printed in an appropriate publication for the field OR an endorsement by the nominee's University unit.

The minimum criterion for the recognition of a DANCER is a premiere/debut performance that is above and beyond normal University activities and is on a regional, national, or international level. The nomination must be accompanied by a review printed in an appropriate publication for the field OR an endorsement by the nominee's University unit.

The minimum criterion for the recognition of a COMPOSER is the premiere/debut performance of an original composition that is above and beyond normal University activities and is on a regional, national, or international level. The nomination must be accompanied by a review printed in an appropriate publication for the field OR an endorsement by the nominee's University unit.

The minimum criterion for the recognition of a CHOREOGRAPHER is the premiere/debut performance of an original composition that is above and beyond normal University activities and is on a regional, national, or international level. The nomination must be accompanied by a review printed in an appropriate publication for the field OR an endorsement by the nominee's University unit.
