Study in Spain with BGSU

High school juniors and seniors: Earn college credit and discover Spain's rich culture, history and language.

For more than 50 years, the BGSU education abroad program in Alcalá de Henares has been helping students experience the beauty of Spain. Alcalá de Henares is a safe, residential and family-oriented city located 40 minutes Northeast of Madrid by train. Participating high school juniors and seniors will live with a host family, travel to gorgeous cities and gain confidence in their Spanish language skills.

FAQ's

No placement tests are required. We trust the teachers to determine the proficiency level of each high school student. If you deem your student has a solid foundation that places them close to the intermediate level, they will be accepted. An intermediate level is four semesters of Spanish, corresponding to the equivalent completion of SPAN 2020 at BGSU.

For BGSU students: SPAN 3950 is a 3-credit hour course that meets the requirements for degree completion but does not count for general elective credit toward a Spanish major or minor.

For non-BGSU students: SPAN 3950 is a 3-credit hour course that can be transferred to other higher education institutions.

Students may choose between a letter grade (ABCDF) or S/U (pass/fail). We encourage students to consult with their high school teacher to make an informed decision. If a student opts for pass/fail, they must inform us by the end of the first week. They must also receive the equivalent of a ‘C’ or better to receive an ‘S’. Please consult the BGSU Undergraduate Grading Policies for more information.
